I am a big fan of Filson gear and saw that Duluth Trading Company had the Filson #258 Padded Rugged Twill Laptop Bag/Briefcase on sale for 30% off list price (while supplies last). I might not need another bag but have been lusting for this model and couldn’t pass up the deal. I called to place the order last Tuesday (the operator informed me they only stocked the tan version), and the bag arrived a week later by FedEx

Top of the line Filson quality all around, good size as well. The main center compartment is padded on the bottom and all sides, squishy but not too thick, with a full-length pocket in front and two dividers for separating your paperwork from your laptop. It has a heavy brass zipper closure and a snap down storm flap to keep the contents dry. There is a full-length open pocket across the back (great place for the morning paper), and two open pockets on the sides, deep but narrow (dropped my cell phone in there and it was a trick to fish out). It has another full-length pocket across the front that is closed in the center when the storm flap is snapped shut. The brass zippered front pocket has a snap ring and a nice set of pocket organizers with spaces for pens, cell phones, pagers, PDA’s, knives, flashlights, etc. inside, and still enough room for a few paperbacks or what have you. It is a good sized, heavy-duty bag with enough room to fill it with more than you would want to carry. Another top-notch piece of kit from the fine folks at Filson.

The main drawback so far; my wife has taken it as an early Valentines Day present! I thought she was happy with the New Sun bag she had been using for work, but I made the mistake of taking my manly possessions out and leaving it around yesterday. I worked late last night, and when she woke me and kissed me goodbye this morning she says “Thanks for the new bag”, grins real big and slings it over her shoulder.

Fun while it lasted, burned by the wife again. At least I don’t have to run out and find some jewelry this year.

Gee thanks James. Now I want a Filson duffel bag even more.
At least you got out of the jewelry store this year.:) I could have got the William Henry T-10 I've been wanting, but no, I end up in the jewelry store instead.:grumpy:

James is dangerous with that Filson stuff. I ended up with a Filson bag because of his constant Filson praise! :D How is the laptop bag compared to the medium field bag? Which should I get next? I already have the small field bag.
Thanks,
Matt

That's me, Mr. Bad Influence ;)

The Briefcase is a whole different animal from the Field Bag; much more capacity and orginazation. I could use it as a tool bag for an average job, it would make a great field office. The Med Field Bag is great for EDC but would fall short for a weekend excursion, my wife has been working at home a bit and was able to get all her paperwork and laptop to work today instead of having her New Sun and a seperate bag for the files. In other words I'm not getting it back.

Since you already have the small, Jazz, I'd reccomend getting the Briefcase from Duluth while they are offereing the sale, I'm very happy with the deal I got and won't miss the trip to the jewelry store at all. But you have fun anyway, Paul, the Lancet will just have to wait :)

ive got the unpadded version and love it. i carried all three years of law school and constantly thought that a lesser bag would be in shreds. i carried about 35# of books and junk, often by grabbing the zipper pulls (!) or a single handle and i havent noticed any damage yet. its a great bag. i have some shipping foam that i add to the bottom and occassionally the sides when i carry my laptop. if you need a good briefcase that is stylish and durable, this is it.
on an aside, be careful carrying your paper in the side pockets. i did for several years, now the stupid newsprint gets all over whatever i put in there. my suggestion is to leave a legal size folder in the pocket and put your paper in that. you'll be very glad you did. filson did not know of a better way to remove the print other than wiping. it worked ok but sure wish id have used a folder all that time.

on another aside, i sent my foul weather raincoat back for a repair recently. it somehow go slashed by the left pocket (about 2"). ill report back how well the repair was performed. they did it for no charge and paid shipping back.

Great idea, thanks for the heads-up!
