Finger-Hole Knives

I really like knives that have a hole for the index finger built into their grips. The Fred Perrin-designed Emerson La Griffe is just about perfect for its intended use. But who wants to settle for "just about"? ;)

I have looked into getting a custom finger-hole knife made, but not too many makers seem to do that sort of design. Can anyone give me some tips on makers who either have made or would be interested in making a custom along those lines?

For that matter, I would be interested in information on production finger-hold designs. I'm familiar with the Emerson, CRKT, TOPS, and S&W models. Are there others that I've missed?

Thanks!

I would be interrested too. The hole handle knives have always appealed to me, being the clutz that i am...

Out of curiosity, how would you want the custom knife to be different from the LaGriffe? I have seen a wide variety made by the original designer, and the Emerson production model is not exactly like any of them as far as I can tell. Are you wanting something like one of Perrin's other originals, or what?

I got a Bearclaw and find it just too bulky for normal carry, even though it has been very useful with all kinds of stuff from gardening to tiling a floor.... Thought about making different thinner scales for it, but never did. I much prefer the symetrical grinds on the Bearclaw to the chisel of the Emerson 'Griffe. Well, enough blather. These 2 blades have probably been compared to death already.

I believe Spyderco's still going forward with the S.P.O.T. As far as custom makers go, try Eric Blair. He has some awesome designs that are well received. You can also try Ferret, but I'm not so sure he's still doing 'em...

My ideal would have a grip shaped like the La Griffe's only slightly thicker with contoured scales of G-10. I would like a 3-1/2" drop point recurve blade and forward-curving 1/2" blade guards above and below. It should be made from Talonite and come with a kydex sheath configured for both neck and horizontal belt carry.

I'm not asking for much, am I? :D

In practice, I doubt I would carry it as a neck knife very often, if at all. So I would be quite happy with a more conventional steel like D-2.

Can anyone make me something like that? Possibly even at a price I can afford? :}

I am looking forward to the Spyderco SPOT!

Do you have any contact information for Eric Blair or Ferret? Web sites or email addresses would be idea.

Thanks for the suggestions!

You also have the Gerber Chameleon's, but I have heard they are clumsy as heck. I would not suggest them.....

Yep, the S.P.O.T. sure seems like it's gonna be awesome. I handled the proto last weekend and it's ultra-comfortable. I wish I'd picked up the folding version to feel it...

Ferret's website it www.ferretknives.com. His email's on the contact page. For Eric Blair, try him at eric@usualsuspect.net or hop over to the USN.

Neat design idea, but I don't know if they'll do Talonite. Actually, what you have in mind sounds a bit similar to the kind of stuff Warren Thomas does in Ti. If you can find him, you get a prize! :D

How about a knife made by Kevin Wilkins? He works out of Germany, and makes his knives exclusively out of BG-42. He makes a great knife called the Ring Thorn, and he is really a very nice guy who does top-notch work. Of course you'd have to talk to him about the sheath, but I'd look into his knives as they are very nice.

Just my .02, though. Worth what you paid for it, but it's all I have.

Lasi Szabo is is a real hidden tresure. This guy makes knives that are just plain amazing. He has new milatary Kerambit that can be descibed in one word "Dangerous" check out his products at

you will be either impressed or scared

made this two for me and my wife:

I exchanged email with Günter a while back, inspired by earlier pictures of your prize above. This thread, plus a bonus from work, has convinced me to go ahead with the order.

I messed up the picture upload so I'll include it in the next message.

Here is picture Günter Böhlke sent me. The red outline is the version I am asking him to make for me.

What is the green outline? Also, is this going to be for defensive purposes, or utility? I ask because I am wondering why you want talonite. I would think talonite would be a great choice for a utility piecee but maybe not for a defensive piece, but I'm only going by what I have read. I have no experience with it. Just sharing ideas.:)

poboy:

The green outline is for a large hawkbill version.

I intend this to be both a defensive and utility piece. Originally I wanted Talonite because I expected to carry it as a neck knife and I worry about sweating on bare steel all day.

Now that I have more experience with nceck knives I have discovered that I rarely carry them. So . . . I am trading out the Talonite for something tougher, probably CPM S90V.
