I was wondering if anyone uses or has thought to use a torch striker as an emergency firestarter in their kits? I've been lurking here a while and i don't recall seeing them mentioned anyway... Man can these things throw sparks!

Awhile back, in Backwoodsman magazine, there was an article about using just the flint as a mini ferro rod, from one of those, attached to a SAK. I tried it - found it to be a PITA.

you know, i was thinking about this about 2 days ago......putt your tinder, cotton ball ect in the striker cup, strike and tip out into a bigger pile of fine shavigns etc.

One hand operation is a plus, but otherwise it's more awkward to carry and with fewer strikes than a simple firesteel.

obviously, but its something we all have (dont we?) in our trucks anyways, in the tool kit

I actually tend to use my lighter for lighting torches. I don't do enough welding/cutting to merit buying one. For the same reason, I'd happily stick with the lighter for 99% of fire lighting in the woods. Firesteels are awesome, but they're still back up.

CanDo...I like it becuase of the one hand operation, and I would not be scuffing up my knives spine. :foot: I wouldnt expect it to be any more awkward then a multitool, and about 12 oz or more lighter. I think it would definantly fit in any pack and not take up hardly any room. I also use a lighter as my #1 firestarter :D:thumbup:

That is exactly what I was thinking myself!:D:cool: . . .

the one handed aspect of it would be good for a feller stuck int he woods, say if he had a broken arm , wrist etc.
