I was told to post this question here and I would get some good answers. So here goes.

I am looking to know if any fire fighters carry a fixed blade in their turnout. Also how do you attach said blade. I am considering either a SOG seal pup or a Becker tac tool. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Start scrolling through this thread Jason, you're going to see a lot of folding goodness but there's fixed blades in there too. Enjoy Rick's work.

I know a fire fighter down in Ventura county California. He is a woodland fire fighter. He said if he showed up with a fixed blade that he'd be the laughing stock of his crew. He carries a gerber multitool and that is all.
He's not a knife guy though.

That's probably cuz the other guys are too cheap to lay down the $$ for a Hinderer. You can say it's "too nice" or "not needed" but I find it impossible to imagine laughing at Rick's work. :)

They wouldn't be laughing at the knife. They'd be laughing at the guy who thought he needed to carry a fixed blade to work.

I guess what I'm trying to say to the OP is that I don't believe that many fire fighter carry fixed blade knives. They carry real tools for serious work. Fixed blade knives like the tac tool are a compromise between a knife and a prybar.

Exactly. A firefighter will never need a fixed blade for prying or heavy duty work.

But hey!, what if they need to chop apart a car, or pry open a door, or bust a window?

To that I reply, Get a freaking halligan bar, or HURST tool, both of which should be on a truck on scene.

No fixed blade on the fire ground. I cannot think of a need for one. I keep a Spyderco Rescue, a leatherman, emt shears and an XM18 in my gear. There will never be a reason to use a fixed blade on anything.

I do keep a fixed blade on my belt during wildland season. This is Alaska and we are in the wilderness. I also have a leatherman and a XM18 in my pocket.

Since you are in the Hinderer forum and you are a firefighter. Give the shop a shout and they will help you get a XM18. It is stout like a fixed blade and a lot more usable.

The only place I keep a fixed blade is on my personal PFD (Swiftwater Rescue Team.) I Keep a spyderco 93mm rescue and a Victorinox Multi-tool in my turnout gear. Can never get to the good knives in my station uniform pockets!

Let's put this in the General forum.

I've carried a few - WM1, Game Warden, Graham Pocket Kuhkri, even a SRKW Bandicoot. The 3 smaller ones I carried on my turn-out pants just like you would carry on a regular belt (just thread the sheath through the adjusting pull strap at you hip or hang it from your suspenders). The Bandicoot I tried stuffing down my radio pocket - it just got in the way most of the time - that was short lived. The smaller knives carried real well actually, but really there isn't much of a need to carry one. I carry a multitool also and it gets more work than the fixed blades ever did. But I like knives and I like to find an excuse to carry them. One day I'll put the Game Warden or Graham back on but right now I'm carrying a ZT 0350 for kicks. If you go with a fixed blade keep it small.

I am a volunteer refinery fire bridage and confine space rescue, I carry a spyderco wave endura 4 on my turnout pants side pocket and have no problem using it with my turnout gloves.

I put a cheap folder in one of my bunker pant pockets and a smith and wesson folder in the other, looking into some pry/knife tools. Tops pry knife, tac tool, and looking at thick bladed knives like the becker companion. I feel that I need this tool for when I'm first one on scene and when prying open a hood or something like that.

check out the ESEE knives. They are very high quality (from what I hear, never actually handeled one myself) and some of them have a rounded point at the bottom of the handle specifically made for smashing windows.
