I know there are many in this forum with extensive knowledge of custom fixed blades. I’ve been collecting folders for awhile, but would like to expand into custom fixed blades (by USA maker). I realize that prices can range from a few hundred to many thousands, but I’d like to limit my first to a forged carbon steel, full tang, wood scales, approx 4-6” blade, at around $500-$1,500 if possible. Future collectibility is a plus, but that’s perhaps unknowable. Would prefer leather sheath over Kydex, but if the blade’s shorter, it could be an EDC, which might make Kydex a better option.
My tastes are more traditional - no wild experimental art pieces. Beauty, ruggedness, usefulness - not merely a safe queen - are important considerations. And I’d like it made by the actual knife maker. There’s something about forged blades that really speak to me. For many years I was a woodworker using only hand tools before physical limitations brought that to an end. As such I have a deep love for the work of a true craftsman.
I think I’ve covered everything important I’m looking for. I would greatly value your input, and would give great weight to a knife that was recommended by several members. Thanks in advance! Oh, one more thing, I’d prefer no recurves. If possible.

For the prices you're willing to spend
I would suggest you look at work of ABS (American Bladesmith Society) JS (journeyman) and MS (Master smith) level work
I say this because while there are a lot of good knife makers these days
MS/JS smiths have been working at their craft for a long time, and have had their work judged by peers to meet a standard of quality
Here are some names to check out, to give you an idea of what kind of work I'm talking about:

Aaron Wilburn ( wilburnforge on IG )
Tad Lynch (lynch_forge on IG)
Tommy Gann (tgannknives on IG)
Don Hanson III (donhansonknives on IG)
Shawn Ellis (Shawn_Ellis_knives on IG)

I assume IG means instagram; I make it a point to keep off social media, but maybe I can browse there without creating an account. Thanks for the specific recommendations.

My opinion would be to cut your budget Way down until you find the size and shape, and maker you like best.....

There are lots of makers here that you can get something awesome for $300 or less.

I feel to really learn about the blade is to Use them.
It's easier with a "cheap" knife.

I would suggest you take a look through the Knife makers market here on BF. There’s also the knife makers gallery area 👍 Some really amazing knife makers here on Bladeforum’s. You’ll get some ideas see some customs and pricing.

Ben Seward fits what you are looking for. I picked one up a year or two ago and was very pleased.

Well, thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions- they’re all very helpful and appreciated! This is a great community and I’m glad to be a part of it. It does seem I’ve fallen into another rabbit hole…😉

I have a couple of great forged user blades in 52100 by Daado of BF.
Some of the best quality users for the price I've seen.
His stuff goes quick on the Exchange but he's good to work with on your request.
Also cool to have a knife from Croatia!

Well you certainly have received some fantastic suggestions and replies. My advice is a little different.....

If it's possible take some of that money and come to the Blade Show in Atlanta.

There you will get to see the full selection of work representing some of the best knifemakers on the planet. You will be able to talk to experts that are otherwise simply not available to you and you will have a chance to look at exactly what sort of genre and style you like.

Not to mention you will have one of the most fun weekends you can imagine.

That said if you like stock removal knives check out John Young. I think he is one of the best fixed blade makers working in the US today. Although his prices are at the upper end of your request his work is superb and rising in value. http://johnyoungknives.com

Good luck with your choice and please come back and tell what you decided on.😉

Also great advice, and if I were younger and in better health, I would no doubt visit some of the many shows around the country. As it is, you group of likeminded folks (for the most part), are my mentors, friends and confidants; priests and pushers.
I will say that having come exploring into fixed blades from the world of self-storage edges, I feel as though I just passed puberty and have been welcomed at the bar for a drink. I like this new environment. Thanks for having me, and thanks for all the very good advice.

I’ve settled on a couple of fixed blades ( one new and another well-used - both from reputable makers to help me decide what I really prefer. I’ll post them when they arrive sometime next week. Many , if not most tend to display monster Bowie type blades that hold little interest for me.
