Finally managed to squeeze some time today to head into the woods with my HDFK. It did not disappoint. After all the batoning on hard wood which I struggled to split with my Hoffman mini bearded axe, it is still shaving sharp. It is definitely a keeper.

The perfect weather and place for our first date

Excellent stuff Don! The HDFK is a brute of a knife and is a keeper for me as well.

There's just something about a CPK with marks on it, it looks so much better! Thanks for sharing!
I was surprised by how easily it cut through a dried standing sapling which is about an inch thick. It was almost effortless when I made the cut at 60 degrees

Looks like a great trip man. Beautiful spot to soak up the sun and play with the beast that is the HDFK! And I agree CPK blades look much better with use on them

this thread makes me happy

Your first date with your HDFK which was a NASK back then... Actually, one story I rather NOT hear :p

Don, congrats on the HDFK with the gold colored inlay. Looks superb! That scenery though! Gosh, absolutely horrible to the eyes! Glad that you had both the LH axe and the HDFK to mask over the view :p :p

Wait.... what Don?!

The HDFK out performed an axe at splitting wood?!

Thanks for sharing your scenery. I did 4 hours of yard work out in the snow today, but only my RLC saw any action.

What do you use to clean the blade when you get home? Same stuff we use over here? Wondering if those tropical species leave different stuff to deal with. I doubt I’m the only one who cleans my blades when I get home.

I am usually not a big knife guy. I usually go for knives around the 4-4 1/2” range and 1/8-5/32 thickness but the HDFK handles great and is very versatile. I am surprised by how well it handles the bigger jobs but more surprised at how well it handles the jobs that I would usually reach for a smaller knife.

Justin, I usually wipe the blade down with wet wipes first. I will leave it alone and store it if the dirt and stains are removed. Else I will use Flitz to polish out the stains. Works for me most of the time.

I am OCD. I always clean the blade and make sure they are shaving sharp before I store them away.

Beat on it, give it a quick wipe down and put it away. It adds “character”

Gotcha, I use a type of hand cleaner, let it sit a while and resin/sap etc wipes off, looks good as new. Then I put it away. I don't sharpen every use.

I understand some people want their knives to look used and beat up, who doesn't want street cred?! But for me, in my personal taste, while some things can look better used and abused like an old Catcher's mitt, knives and women aren't one of them.

butter removes sap pretty good

Gasoline baby

Edit- Just kidding, playing with gasoline is bad for your lifespan, benzene is horrible for your DNA, only real hardcore redneck role-players like my dad would actually advocate this. Plus it would probably melt or at least impregnate your micarta handles.
