I'm Headed to the Turks and Caicos with a spyderco salt, petzel headlamp and some fenixes, and am thinking about taking some spyderline and hooks for off the dock night fishing. Figuring a new rod and reel too much trouble to take.

Has anyone good gear suggestions?

Specificity is most appreciated, and if recommended to go ahead and gear up (with new rod, reel, line, leader and hooks) please include brands, sizes, etc.

Really appreciate the help,

p

P.s- for the Recluse enthusiests- found another one dead stuck to amazon packaging tape. Meeting the entomolygist in 30...

I got these plastic things that you wrap your line onto for handline fishing. My dad used these in Hong Kong for groupers, so I guess they would be ok. I've used them here on white bass before. They are ok, kinda like ice-fishing with the handline feel.

Spyderco salt, petzel..sounds like my fishing setup.

I didn't use any leader and trilene big game 12# test, now I would use 20# powerpro. If you are fishing off piers and small inlets I have never caught anything big enough to need real heavy test, I have caught some toothy critters that really abraided my line, I just cut it off and retied. I caught a fish in the nile that looked a lot like a bluegill but weighed about 2 pounds, loads of fun. Chris

I brought a 4 piece St. Croix rod and Catalyst reel with me to the Cayman Islands a couple years ago. I used regular old silver phoebes with great success to catch fish at night. If the fish are used to bread from tourists, give that a shot too!

this part of the World they call them Cuban Yo-Yo's .Keep one in my butt pack for my 5 mile walk's along the shore line in case i smell fish:D

That Cuban Yo-Yo looks pretty handy. I think if I was going to the islands to fish off a dock, and I was traveling light, I'd take some #8, 6, 4, & 2 (smaller number, bigger hook) stainless steel Eagle Claw hooks, with some 12 lb. and some 20 lb. line (whatever brand is the preferred monofilament line nowdays), some appropriate sinkers and maybe a float or two, and definitely some steel leader wire or prepared wire leaders about a foot long, because many salt water fish have sharp teeth. Be sure you know how to tie a proper knot in these newer lines, too. Catch your first fish however you can, then cut it up to use for bait to catch others. Cut bait, shrimp, clam innards, and fiddler crabs all work well in most places. I'll bet you're gonna have a real good time! :D Oh, and don't eat those puffer fish!!!

Thank to all.

Akabu and wetdog- terrific suggestion. Unfortunately, I have horrible experince with paypal- the only way by which to pay the vendor to which you so curtiously linked me.

Dr. Mudd- I'll get some varied hook sizes and leaders within the next week

I have dug out some lightweight Cabelas rods and two Shimano 4000 spinners, and have purchased the following:

Size 1/0 Gamakatsu "octopus circle" hooks
20 lb. "Fireline Crystal" line
Berkley Gulp shrimp and crab shaped bait
Size 1 Mustad live bait hooks
Size 3 Ball bearing swivel w/ fast lock
Size 3 fast lock bass snap
Size 4 lead split shot

I was going to start live crabs I caught on the beach but then wondered how to bait without being pinched and poked, and then where anatomically should the hook pass?

Thank you all,

paul

Pull the offending parts off with pliers and then thread on the hook through whatever part you can. Chris

Actually, you can probably get all your stuff down there.

If it's anything like the Keys, even 7-11's, grocery stores and the like sell line and hooks and stuff. Even small freezers with frozen bait.

Yo Yo's should not be a problem as they are VERY common in all the islands.

For dock fishing you can make a yo yo of sorts using a coke bottle or soup can. I doubt you would need more than 150' of line. The larger yo yo's are used on boats for 75-200' of water or so for big bottom fish.

I really would suggest spending a couple $$ and get a book (Pamphlet), on how to tie different knots for different types of line. Tying the wrong knot and having the hook come loose seems to be the biggest problem.

That would be the best money spent IMO and would be less than $10. Probably less than $5.

I've seen more fish lost due to knots coming loose than anything else. Unless they get 'rocked up'.

A long time ago I saw a TV show set somewhere in Central America I think it was, and they showed some local people hand line fishing with the old-style Coke bottles. The narrow waist made a perfect line keeper and they could cast like a spinning reel off the end. Looked like it worked great. I always wanted to turn up something from wood on a lathe for myself.

one of the things in my youth was taught to me by a friend on my first trip to Puerto Rico.
using a Machete he cut a four foot stick and sectioned off four 12" pieces stripped the bark off, cut a shallow notch around the center ,stripped some palm leaves and rolled a cord .then he took some thorns and tied them on the cord and tied the cords {about 12" long} to the center. Then we went hunting for beach crabs saw them as they ran to thier holes shoved the Machete ahead of them, FIlP and smash! Bait:D ! He threw the baited sticks out into the surf and we waited, when the fish hit you could see the stick wigwag, you leaped into the surf and and wahla Fish :D
PS: this is the type we caught: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=974

OK, this hand line thing has got me going, and now that I know what I'm looking for I remembered this:

It's an old-style bow fishing drum reel I've had forever. Put a handle across the back and I think it has possibilities. It's very light and they are still available for little money if you look around. What do you think?

Blue sky- Terrific! I'll check my bow and the condition of it's reel tonight

Akabu- you've given me a terrific project for the 4th!!

This is going to be terrific.
