Fixed blade for police duty

Hi all, i'm hoping someone can offer some advice on carrying a fixed blade as a police officer. I'm in patrol and wont have an outer carrier, just regular duty belt and uniform, i do have cargo pockets on my pants though if that helps. The kabar tdi seems to be the popular choice, but it doesn't have any retention and creates more problems than it solves. I'm trying to find a way to carry one, either on the belt or possibly in a cargo pocket. If on the belt there would have to be some sort of retention. I'm looking at an esee-3 so about 8" OAL, but open to suggestions. Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

is this for a utility knife? or as a last ditch self defense knife? that would probably dictate the type of knife for last ditch... i've heard some good things about the benchmade H&k Plan d knife.... its similar to the tdi knife. fo
as a fixed utility you can't go wrong with as esee.. they are excellent knives... i've also heard others swear by TOPS Interceptor #341 Police Utility as a general purpose utility knife. if its a hidden last ditch... the tops TOPS Cockpit Commander looks interesting and could have different ways to carry it. One option is to rig a way to connect the sheath to a carabiner, hooked into the pocket somehow.... or wear the knife clipped to your inner belt, inside the duty belt. the cockpit commander looks like it would work that way. With tops knives.. you seem to either love them or hate them. Personally I carry an emerson P-sark clipped into my offside pocket. good for utility, deploys quickly with the wave and the name p-sark stands for police search and rescue knife, a name that is very manager/remf friendly.

I wouldn't recommend a fixed if your planning for it to be used in the utility sense - just use a folder. But if you want something low profile, I just picked up one of these (pic below) and you can conceal it anywhere.. I'm still trying to figure out if I want it concealed or on my tac vest or concealed IWB. Also, this thing is pretty small - so it won't be added weight on your overall load-out. I now have a 530 clipped to my 511's and this *somewhere on me.

If you are open to a folder, then a Spyderco Endura in stainless would fit the bill, and fit the knife pocket of a pair of 5.11 trousers.

For a fixie, a TOPS Mil-SPIE 3. Has a kydex sheath with a rotatable clip allowing for any number of carry configurations. It has a uniquely shaped exposed pommel that makes for a glass breaker.

I already have folders and a last ditch type knife. Was looking to use the fixed as more of a utility, but didn't want it sticking out so that it screamed grab me. Anyone know of a sheath with retention for the esee?

The ESEE 3 mil comes with a great sheath (the best factory sheath of any knife imo) and it has great retention as well as molle locks, a molle back, and a boot clip.

Be careful sir. An officer on my department got his throat slashed and nearly died after the suspect used the knife from the officer's duty belt against him. Now there are no more knives on duty belts.

That sucks but a officer on a neighboring department had a guy try to take his gun and he manage to get his knife out and stab the dude to get him off him. He was a older guy(the cop) and the pos that did it to him was twice his size and younger. So its kind of a personal decision risk vs reward type deal. But I would check out gavkoo his edc's are small, light, and fit the hand well. If you got one with black handles it would not stick out much on the duty belt.

I personally really dig carrying a FB. They are an excellent work tool. But if used in a tense situation, say, a rescue, I believe a folder is a better option. Sure, a FB can be accessed a little quicker but getting it back into a sheath can be a little dangerous. Whereas one can just close a folder and blindly shove it into any pocket or pouch. The knife I most highly recommend is a Strider SnG.

I have folders already, just looking to expand a bit :) I'm liking the strider db-l a lot. Do you know what the difference is between it and the db-le by chance?

Strider DB is a tough as nails little fixed blade , that is super easy to carry, and would be perfect as a back up to a firearm, They are pricey but they are stout stout little knives. Your not going to peel an apple with the db or fix your lunch , But if you need to pry open a car door at an auto accident, bust out glass with your blade, or even use it as a self defense tool the DB is where it's at. you can get tthe regular stock which is .250 of s30v , or if you know where to look you can get the thin stock which is .190 and can be had in 3v or cts-xhp , those are limited runs the 3v is really hard to find , but shoot me a pm and ill show you where some cts-xhp versions are...

What's the difference between the db, db-l and db-le? Their website isn't very good and doesn't even have descriptions of the knives. Also, what is their warranty like?

If you have money to spend, I'd suggest, albeit not from personal experience but from that of a forum poster -Edwood7 - a Winkler belt knife. Edwood7 works with military and police in Mexico doing drug raids, etc. Winkler also makes tactical tomahawks which the same forum poster used to penetrate kevlar and gashing a perp's shoulder that was reaching for another of his team member's guns. I only suggested those because they have seen use, not only by Edwood7 but other armed personnel. If I can find his threads about these encounters, I'll edit this post. If you do get piqued by this knife and want more hand's on accounts, PM Edwood7. I'm sure he'll give a censored versions of what he's done with edged weapons. I only mention this guy because of all the forum people, he has probably seen some of the most use on the job with edged tools.

EDIT: Edwood7's first review of the Winkler Belt knife. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...inkler-Knives-II-Belt-Knife?highlight=winkler Only found this link. Ed just has too many posts to sift through.

Not a knife, but his Winkler tomahawk vid on kevlar vest penetration. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...er-hawk-vs-IIIA-kevlar-vest?highlight=winkler

Last recommendation, and if you want a knife that was designed for the military and police, then go for the discontinued, but still available (at a great price of $135.00) the Zero Tolerance collaboration effort with Strider & Kershaw, Model 0121. CPM S30V, 8" overall and a 4.5" blade
