I am a knife maker in MN and I have done some research on this subject. Each city has its own laws about carrying knives. I check online and with the police departments in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Anoka, Coon Rapids, and Blaine, all of the local laws stated that any folding knife with a blade over 4 inches was illegal to carry and any fixed blade knife regardless of length was illegal to carry. However, I also spoke with an officer at each of the city police departments via email and when I asked "what is legal to carry" they all replied, "I don't know, that's a good question let me look it up." None of them were able to find anything concrete for me but they all gave me this advice, as long as you don't go overboard with the blade (keep it around 4 inches) and you're not doing anything stupid with it you should be OK. For two years now I have been carrying a 4 1/4 inch fixed blade knife just about every where I go, banks, movie theaters, restaurants, I've even spoken with a few cops and no one says anything other than "Hey that's a nice looking knife can I see it?" My brother also carrys a 6 inch K-bar with him and has done so for several years without an issue. The bottom line is use good judgment.
