Fixed blade--pocket carry

Does anybody carry a shorter fixed blade in their pocket?

It seems like you could rig up some sort of hard plastic pocket protector that the blade would slide loosely into, and mount a clip on the handle of the knife so it would ride like a clipped folder.

Anyone ever try anything like this?

I made the sheath to carry my forged gentleman's fb in my jacket pocket. I works well with baggy (5.11's, chinos) pants too.

Here's a good thread we had on this a little while back : LINK

I frequently carry small fixed blades this way and have another one on the way that will be fitted with a pocket sheath as well. Pocket carry is one of my favorite methods.

I've been doing pocket carry with the Boker (licensed copy) of Bud Nealy's tanto Aikuchi. I just removed the attachments from the sheath. Pocket carry has been the only way I've carried this knife. I think Bud's idea of a magnet work better than other kydex sheaths for pocket carry. Bud's system uses a magnet so it doesn't need that super tight fit; the knife come out super fast and the sheath stays in the pocket. For anyone nervous about the lack of a guard, this is still an excellent design. When I can save the $$$, I'm gonna have to get the Nealy original.

My Anso Hybrid, in its leather sheath, gets a bit of pocket time. I must confess that I do prefer horizontal carry on a belt though. It just seems like a lot of work, putting a fixed blade away into your front pocket, and not cutting your leg open in the process.

The fixed blade that gets the most pocket carry time from me is the BlackJack Small. It has the great Blackjack back pocket sheath, which is perfect for the rear pocket of a pair of blue jeans. I use it constantly in the back yard, cutting sticks, small branches and grooming bushes. The convex edge just mows through small vegetation. I still, after years of ownership, consider the Blackjack Small to be one of my 10 most useful knives. The knife is a masterpiece of functionality.

AG Russell has a nice one called the Woodswalker. I have 2 of them. One with the kydex neck sheath and the other with the leather. The leather one fits nicely in a front, hip, or back pocket. It's really an inexpensive little knife. Here's the link:

Stormdrane, can you tell me if that kydex sheath that comes with knife would hang around the neck for left handed carry?

I have been looking for something just like that, thanks for that link!

Yes, it will work for right or left handers. It's so lightweight I forget I have it on sometimes.

Michigan maker Don Cowles makes small fixed blades, (like trout and bird knives), that you carry in the pocket. He puts a clip on the pouch sheaths he makes.

I am sending my new Mikro to Lifter for a pocket pouch as we speak.

I occasionally carry an Applegate-Fairbairn Bootknife in my pocket. The size of the knife and configuration of the sheath are good for pocket carry. I carried it for EDC for one summer. It's not much of a utility blade though. I've also used several small knives with keychain sheaths.

There are many knives that will work for pocket carry but not many come with sheaths that work well for this.

These little fixed blades make for great pocket carriers and can be purchased quite reasonably as far as customs go.

This particular one is 5.5" OAL and is not any longer than many of my tactical folders.

I have an Anza TW (4" overall, 1 5/8" blade) that I frequently carry in my pocket. I have two sheaths for it, one is the standard one, for belt carry, the other is a modified sheath without the belt loop, so it takes up less space in my pocket. I've found it to work quite well.

I have been carrying a Fixed Blade Pocket knife for years. I carry mine in my right front pocket. The sheath stays in the pocket, the knife slides in and out of the sheath. Leather or kydex.

Well I changed my mind. I'm going to stick with a folder for EDC after all. Although a fixed blade is more capable than a folder in almost every way. I have been hearing "horror stories" of fixed blade injuries resulting from accidents (falls, etc) causing the knife to go through the sheath and stab the user in the leg or worse. With these stories in my and my recent consider to going back to a fixed blade for EDC, I thought I'd run some tests of my own and the results were not good. I found that it does not require much force at all to put a good, sharp knife through either Kydex or leather which is what all of my sheaths are made of.

FB carry is not for everyone, but having made kydex sheaths regularly for the better part of 4 years I can tell you that it would be nearly impossible for a knife to punch through a properly made kydex sheath.

It would most likely take several design flaws compounding to cause failure. I would think the knife would have to be non-scaled, the sheath relatively loose or poorly fit with the Chicago screws/rivets placed improperly for this to happen.
