I am looking for a knife specifically designed for fleshing hides. Would the basic Ulu knife be best or is there some other design that works even better? Any recommendations? Thanks, Rufous.
If you figure on doing a lot of hides there are two-handed fleshing knives and other tools that can help a lot. If you want something for the field I would look at an Ulu or Uluchet. Here's a link to pro tools:
Another interesting possibility is to us a mezzaluna (an Italian big brother of an Ulu). The larger size might be handy verses an ulu. Take a look at a Froogle search. On the second or third page you find two-handed all-stainless steel variants that look interesting.
I used to raise rabbits for sale as meat and the skins went to a guy who bought them in bundles of 25 cleaned and streached and dried. I processed about 100 rabbits every two weeks.
the knive I used was the Gerber Flayer with aluminum handle that has a cat's tounge finish. Impervious to blood and water the Flayer has been discontinued but it is a flawless skinner and fleshing knife.
