The main thread is over in "Tinkering and Embellishment", but that subforum doesn't get much love- been almost a full day and it's still one of the top 3 threads. Anyway, while it DOES belong there, I saw a fob question here and just wanted to point anyone interested in some EDC beads in that direction to help me out with a poll.

I did a 180 on my feelings about lanyard beads after seeing the work that goes into them. I don't care to carry them all the time, but there are a few that are really just amazing. The poll was preference of silver or brass tone, but the underlying motive is that I think I can manage to get some of the really good ones for us at much better prices- which was always what kept me away. I don't know if I sell 1-2 a week if I'd have to upgrade my membership but I'm not planning on making a side hustle of it, just trying to get us a deal for those that are interested.

I also have been experimenting with using solvent based glow paints/epoxy that are a LOT better than what we are used to- they glow all night if you charge them up with a small UV flashlight.

Anyway, if you have an interest head over there and post and I will try and get a bunch for us- these are not knock-offs, I have been talking to the artist that makes a lot of the popular ones and I can add some glow effects and the price would be a lot less than you normally get them for with the full blessing of the artist that makes them.

I am still waiting to hear from Spark, I thought it would be a good thing for us as a community if we designed a bead together that was Bladeforum specific and used the proceeds to help fund this site with any extra profit being given to a worthy charity in need due to the ongoing pandemic.

I know that this really belongs in tinkering/embellishment but it has been like 3 weeks now with no attention because that forum just doesn't get many views...and if you guys think it is a dumb idea I won't pursue it, and if you think it is a good idea I will press on.

Bottom line, I thought a special bead for Bladeforums (almost like a challenge coin) would be a cool thing for members to have, maybe even the off chance you might spot one and connect with a BF member out in the real world, plus be a positive thing all around to strengthen our feeling of community here (since we could all have a say in what the bead would look like), and do some other positive things as mentioned.

Thanks!

I don't think that we can get into clockwork like miniature mechanisms.. just a fob bead. I was thinking something with "BladeForums" on it and maybe a nod to the year and the current situation. If enough people like it (and this is presuming Spark is OK with it) then we could do one every year, or to commemorate major milestones of the site or something.

I think that would be a great idea. I'm always looking for interesting beads to add to my fobs.

Man I would love one. I think its an awesome idea. I am not usually a lanyard/bead guy but I would rock one with meaning. Sounds like a winner to me buddy. I'd be glad to put it on one of my rotation knives. Link the thread and I'll post in it for you.

I am a bit old fashioned (meaning old) and I just don’t get the fascination with fobs on knives. A lanyard yes, it is a valuable way to secure your knife to your person, so it doesn’t accidentally drop from a work site or fall into the depths of an ocean. But fobs seem to be that much more clutter and beaded fobs may very well scratch up your knife’s finish.

Some like to use fobs to extend the grip purchase on their knife; if that’s the problem, then why not just buy a knife that better fits your hand. Perhaps the fob is just a way to carry some extra cordage, but I would say that there are probably better ways to carry a few feet of cordage then by having it dangle from a frequently used tool.

I get that it’s bling, but there are lots of ways to decorate your knife’s appearance that are less hindering than the application of this modern day sword knot. Yes, it can be done and to your taste, but should you? I guess that I see the lanyard fob as yet another passing fad.

Well we have to table the discussion until Spark gets back to me. I messaged him like 3 weeks ago so hopefully I'm a little higher on his list. I would just like a way to ID other Bladeforums members out there on the street- since it's never happened. Someone mentioned in a thread a few months ago that we hardly get to talk knives outside this forum, I know if I saw a guy rocking a Hinderer or CRK or similar it'd be good for a 5 min conversation... I'd carry the bead just to show support for the forums.

Handy way to hold onto your knife when your hands are busy:

Then just drop er back in your hand when ya need er again:

Absolute requirement in our world, I'd have difficulty selling a knife that din't have one:

Also handy for withdrawing the knife from a properly fitting sheath that has good enough retention for horseback use:

Kinda handy.

Fobs are ok, but you could crack a tooth on a bead. Not sure cowgirls/boys would be lining up for these.

We can't proceed until the green light from Spark- if anyone can get int touch faster, or if we can all send a message with the title "BLADE FORUM COMMUNITY BEAD" please do so we can get his attention.

As far as the actual project goes, I am hoping it will be something we can all take part in, have a say in, and bring us coser together as a community while raising some money for the site and possibly a charity
I am willing to donate my time to organize this
I also have a professional artist that agreed to help us.
I think a leather fob would be a good addition to all this - the goal here is to join together in a positive way and to have a way to connect with members outside the forum.

But again, we can't go forward until Spark gives us some attention on this so we need to table the discussion until someone hears back from him. FYI I have been waiting several weeks so am doing all I can to get this on his radar.

No, you're right- I didn't think of that. Dumb of me.
LOL to the above comments but it would be really cool if we had a "transformer" bead lol
You get a tiny knife with a bunch of places that have pivots so you can fold it into a cube.
