I must tell my wife what knife I want for our special day coming up soon. Options are
1. Recon 1 with drop point
2. Large Voyager with drop point
3. Recon 1 Tanto in satin from blades canada. I don't have a tanto yet,
My American Lawman has a tip I really like, sharp and strong. I find a 4" blade to be optimum for EDC so the lawman seems a little short. I know the Tanto would be a strong tip and perhaps I should just go with that as I don't have a tanto.
My Large clip point Voyager (decided I don't like clip points) has a much thinner tip than the Lawman so I wonder if the clip point voyager has a thicker tip? Also how does the Recon 1 drop point tip thickness compare to a Lawman tip thickness?

thanks
Dennis

I’d say go with the satin exclusive Recon 1 tanto. Can’t help you on the lawman comparison.

People like to blindly recommend tanto without doing proper comparisons. It’s not just about the width of the tip but also the thickness, have to look at the whole cross section/volume. Also tanto tip can be very thin at the very end of the tip where it’s more likely to break, and the Recon 1 tanto is a good example of a wide tip with a very skinny point.
Some spear points blade can have thicker tip than tanto. For example the ultimate hunter, AD15, AD10, Bush Ranger all have beefier tip than the Recon 1 tanto. In fact, the drop/spear point Recon may have a beefier tip at the first 1/8” inch of the tip.
Of your 3 choices I would go with the Recon 1 drop point, i own all of them.

If you want the thickest I suggest you try out an SR1 in clip point or tanto. They both have a really thick tip giving the a little thicker tip to the tanto. Also like mentioned the Bush Ranger has a thick tip but is a little short in the blade dept compared to the SR1 S35vn model clip point or tanto in green g10.

I'm like you and was looking for a folder with a thick tip and settled on the SR1. If you want to try out a less costly version try the SR1 Lite. The only difference is the steel and handle and a few others but I hear they are good knives as well.

any of those three are gonna be good. I lean towards the recons as I just like them.

Recon 1 spear point. I love my tanto, I have a spear point Code 4 (very similar to Recon 1 in general) and I would imagine the Recon 1 would be the same or similar in terms of strength.

Recon 1 with a spear point seems to have a plenty strong tip. I m not a tanto fan.

IMHO, as long as you don’t go crazy with prying, any of those blades will have a strong enough tip. For normal knife usage, they’ll hold up just fine. Never had an issue with my tanto Recon 1 or clip point Voyager.

Yeah kinda wondering why he needs the strong tip.

Maybe I don't "need" a strong tip so much but I want it. The lawman tip gets thick real quick and I have experienced no drawbacks to this thicker tip in the tasks that I do.

I hear ya, sometimes want and need gets blurry for me anyway when it comes to knife buying. After seeing how some people use their knives I was picturing opening manhole covers and gun safes, lol. Good luck with your choice and post some pictures and thoughts if you are so inclined.

You need a tanto bad!
yeah CS created the cult of the
car hood piercing tanto
wait till op sees this :)

The tip of my Rajah 3 looks pretty robust. It gets pretty thin in terms of blade stock, but I’d have to deliberately abuse it to break it off. I have faith in the Recon 1 tanto’s tip as well.

Cold Steel knives are pretty much overkill for EDC. The good kind of overkill.

I told my wife to get me the spearpoint recon 1, almost told her the tanto recon 1. Pretty much I get a new knife from her every bday, xmas and our special day which is next weekend. Since I bought the american lawman I havent bought anything but CS.
The Lawman was the one that hooked me. Until I got that one, I thought the PM2 was the best all around edc. Now I think there is a tie.
