Greetings. I have read several recent threads about folding saws but have not seen any post comparing a folding saw with a buck saw. Obviously the folder would be more compact but I have seen some cool collapsible buck saws too and could probably make my own saving a bit. I would appreciate any opinions about which cuts better.
Thanks,
josh

A buck saw is a much, much better cutter than the folding deals. The tensioned blade lets you cut on both push and pull strokes and won't bind up like the folders, and depending on the blade you choose, it'll fly. The grip at near 90 degrees is alot more comfortable too. I made my own as a Scouting project years ago, bought an old antique one (don't use an old wooden one, they absolutely will break) and copied it.

I'm a big fan of the Silky folding saw. It's light, easy to carry, and works very well. Having said that, I'll also say that I have three buck saws in different sizes, too. For hiking and camping, it's almost always the folding saw. When there is serious cutting to be done though, the buck saw is champ: no contest at all.

For hiking I like the convenience and light weight of the folder. If I know there will be heavy cutting (rare), then buck saw all the way.

Thanks for the replys guys. Weight isnt much of an issue for me as I will mostly use it out of the truck or canoe.

Another option is something like the Silky Zubat 330mm fixed blade. I believe mine weighs about 18 oz. with sheath and will easily out cut most folders (except perhaps the largest Silky folders).

I've wondered about real good folding saws for so long but frankly there isn't much of a niche between the saw blade on my SAK Outrider and my 12" bow saw. If weight isn't a factor then I say bow saw / buck saw all the way.
