What is a good food safe blade protector? So that I can protect my blades, while still not having to worry if I use one from storage or collector's area as a kitchen knife?

Thanks!

I have been using Froglube on food prep knives for several months now with good results. I got it after seeing test results where it outperformed mineral oil which was what I had been using.

Do you mean sheath or oil?

I use plastic sheaths from kitchen knife site also their mineral oil which is food safe.

Perhaps he is referring to blade cover options. I use the same Forschner/Victorinox Blade Safe covers. Good product.

I use and sell both Blade Saver by Ultimate edge which is a fold over that the knife rests in, and Blade Safe From Lamson Sharp which is a hinged plastic cover that snaps together.
Great results with both. As far as oils go, Never use Olive oil to coat a blade. It can turn rancid and make you poop like a goose!

LOL, see what happens when posts are not clear? I would be clear in distinguishing stored blades from blades you might reach for soon, though.

For storage, TW25B grease. It is odorless, non-toxic, and washes off easily. I would definitely wash it off before using the knife, though. No idea what it tastes like, but better to eat with a clean blade.

For a carbon steel blade you will be reaching for soon, either just keep it clean and stored in a dry location or keep a very light coat of mineral oil on the steel, applied with a cloth or paper towel dampened with the oil. This is not a long term storage solution, though.

edge guards. I like the transparent ones from Messermeister.
i was searching the forum for < protector >, looking for edge protectors, edge guards, Klingenschutz protection guard . There isn't much choice on the market (Kai, Wüsthof, Chroma, Messermeister) seems like and the cheapest solution is good enough for me. I will check out pricing and availability of Messermeister in our country, thanks!

Currently my chef knife blade is protected by a semi-transparent plastic sleeve from the Chroma Knife Safe Pro series (Made In Japan? Made In China?). On the back side it says "Please Keep and Use This Sleeve as Knife Protector (Patent: 200820176557.0)". There are 8 sizes available afaik. The size which i got is the KS-06 19,7 x 5 cm, costing me 5.4€ a year ago incl free national shipping. El cheapo me would not want to spend more on an edge guard, i.e. a piece of plastic.

The food-safe plastic is firm and makes a good impression at first (and it can be thrown into the hot dishwasher?) but some part of it cracked off on me. Well tbh not me personally but someone from the household and she wouldn't tell me how it happened . The front side labeling gets rubbed off after a while and after yet another month i would not remember the product's name or from where i had ordered it. I wouldn't mind ordering the identical item again —because it is low maintenance and there isn't much choice else on the market—, the lady just has to be more careful in handling the plastic sleeve!

Maybe i'll give the scharfes japan dealer a call. We have 2 years of Gewährleistung in gemani. Is it worth calling about a 5€ item? You betcha ;) :D

EDIT: I contacted them and they let me have a free replacement, so sweet! I come to believe that all specialist knife shops have outstanding obliging service, not necessarily charging for every bit and pieces. Totally made my week!!

I wouldn't mind ordering the identical **** :poop: again, i'd just have to be more careful in handling the plastic sleeve!

Maybe i'll give the scharfes japan dealer a call and ask him if i have to accept that my unit has cracked so easily. We have 2 years of Gewährleistung in Germany.
