For people that say they can't afford basic leatherworking tools

Just got back from Harbor Freight and they have a 3 tool set for leather workers for like $7. It includes a straight groover, an adjustable groover and an adjustable "V" groover. I bought one because it had a straight groover. I've made a groover in the past and I couldn't make one at these prices. Something to check into, they were on the aisle with the Exacto type knives.

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking for some groovers to learn with.

Thanks Will, those tools from Tandy Leather are mucho expensive. I'll run over there today and pick some up.

The problem with Harbor Freight is that it's difficult to run in a just spend $7. My wife has told me (half joking, and half seriously) many times that I'm banned from going there. Does that make me a bad husband! Ha! Na, she can't go to the fabric store for "a few" buttons without getting a bunch of fabric, so I guess we're even...

:) :) :)

Just like anything else from HF these aren't quite the quality of Tandy much less an Osbourne or w/e that name is but at the price these aren't bad and with a touch of fine sandpaper will be much nicer.

Thanks for the tip, Will. Did they have other leatherworking tools/stamps/etc., or just the set you describe above?

I've been buying stuff at Tandy, and it adds up very quickly.

I searched harbor freight's website for the term leather and didn't find any additional leather working tools.

However, I did learn that they have a leather strop mounted on rosewood for $10. They also have long strops for straight razors - the old style that used to hang on the inside door knob of bathrooms (my grandpa still has one).

Might be worth a gander next time I'm in there.

Y'all need to thank me for this, I dug through my garbage to get the packaging. :barf:

Item 98051, 3pc Leather Crafting Tool Set

Package says it's an edge beveler, adjustable "v" gouge and an adjustable groover. I tried and did some grooving with the small edge beveler.

I may buy the store out and sell these for $15 :p

Thanks Will, I saw that in the catalog and have been meaning to order it,and some welding magnets and a tarp for the tractor...... damnit they got me again :p

I really lucked out. Last summer I was back in Eastern Montana were I grew up and was visiting my one brother who still lives in the area. I had given him one of my early damascus knives and a sheath. We were talking and he mentioned he had all my old leather working tools I had gotten for Christmas while in High school, almost 40 years ago and some he had picked up in a yard sale. Anyway he laid over 100 tools on me. I an set forever. I had thought that stuff was long gone.
