Foredom and router speed control?

Would running a Foredom off a router variable speed control be bad for it in any way? I don't like the pedal much for long periods of work at less than full speed. I seem to remember another member posting a pic of his Foredom running one of those.

Any advice you have on this, be it for or against, would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked through the Foredom speed controls page? Maybe you could discern something from that? Here's an excerpt from there...

Pairing a speed control with a motor used to be fairly easy, but with the introduction of our permanent magnet Series TX and Series LX motors, the line became more complicated. Series TX and LX motors require dedicated speed controls with special electronics. Controls for Series TX and LX motors are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE with controls for Series SR and other discontinued universal type motors.

Phil is spot on....not all flex shafts can be controlled by a simple speed control.

Foredom, makes a counter top speed control unit for all its motors as well as a foot control. Look on their site of one of the jewelry suppliers and yo should see them.

What model Foredom do you have?, I may have some spare bench top controllers.

Thanks guys.
Stacy, it is a TX. it would be great to have the proper control. Let me know if you have one I could buy from you. Thanks.

I apologize for that very bad sugestion I made and am thankful that those who knew the answer posted. Frank

I hear ya Frank. That was my belief too, up until a month ago. That's when I found out the DC motor I had stashed for a grinder build was a permanent magnet type and the variable frequency drive I had for it wouldn't work.

A question related.... Are there flex shafts y'all buy or adapt to similar variable speed motors, like laminate trimmers or maybe a rotozip?

I've never really heard of much besides Foredom.

I can see how a regular variable speed might work better than a foot feed, especially for extended sessions. I've got a Bosh and a Porter-Cable variable speed laminate trimmer. Probably about 6-6.5 amp motors. I don't know what Foredoms run.

Are they simply the best machines?

TX and LX motors are electronically controlled, and require a different controller than the simpler motors. I'll take a look in the storage unit this weekend, and see if I have a spare EMX counter top control unit for one. If I do, it is yours.

Here is the control that you need:

I'm sorry Patrice. I thought I emailed you. The controllers I have in the storage are all SR type, and won't work.

I believe micromark.com sells a table top controller that will work on the older Foredoms.
