Anyone own a forever flashlight?? No batteries, EVER for is pretty cool. I would like to hear how well they work

I beleive when you shake the tube, the magnet inside moves back and forth between the coil of wire in the center of the tube. This creates an electrical charge which is then stored in a capacitor which the light bulb draws power from.

We talked about this briefly in one of my circuits classes. I don't remeber exactly what the prof said but I think it has to do with the fact that magnetic and electric fields are basically the same thing. When the magnet passes through the coil of wire(an inductor), the magnetic field creates an electrical charge through electro-magnetic induction. I think this is called Faraday's Principle.

Looks similar to the Nightstars.

You can read a review of these lights here:

There's a downside to using these types of lights. Here's a quote from THE LIGHT SITE:

"As a result of the strong magnetic field generated by this light, the light MUST be stored and used away from anything sensitive to a strong magnetic field. DO NOT place near a TV, monitor, floppy disks, hard drives, credit cards (don't stuff it in your back pocket with your wallet!), video tapes, or sensitive electronics."

hey i know you may not like this,
but when iw as little, my best friend got me this for my birthday, i really like it and it has lasted a long time, under abuse, it doesent look like it in the picture b/c mines older, and i painted it when i was young, there's a switch on the top, put it forward and you get a flood light, backwards is a concentrated beam.

When cranking the light, you have to do it pretty fast if you want it really bright, it easily brightens up to that of a mag light

for an inexpensive light, that will surely strengthen your fingers :P i suggest this light, heres a pic

I think something like this is great to have behind your car seat. When you need it, its there, with no worry about batteries that are dead or anything of that nature. A surefire replacement, NEVER, but for $50 I wouldn't mind having the full size model for my trunk

I've seen those Russian made lights that Aaron posted. You can get them for $10 at Brigade Quartermasters. They're not very bright, but some light is better than having no light at all.:D

Bright as a :barf:Maglite:barf:? You've got to crank those suckers up pretty good. At least they're eco-friendly and probably a good thing to have if you ever find yourself in the dark and your flashlight has run out of battery life:D

I have one, nothing to wear out in a lifetime, just treat it well (don´t drop it) and it should last.

The single LED is focused to give a reasonably bright light in a small area, it won´t illuminate a room and won´t illuminate far, but is good for simple general use.

The magnet is strong, when picked up something may have attached to it.

It´s big, like a 3 or 4 D cell light, not an EDC light but good to keep around the house or in the car (as in trunk or under seat).

If kept on for more than a few minutes it will need some pumping, not particualrly hard but makes it impractical for some uses since you have to stop illuminating to recharge.

In general I´m happy with it as a "nice to have" but is not a main flashlight or EDC flashlight.

Edited to clarify, I´m refering to the large forever flashlight.
