Forge welding 80CRV2?

I've got someone wanting a large cleaver/kitchen knife, 3 1/2" wide. I could order some steel closer to the size I need, but can't really afford it rite now, and don't have a clue what I'd do with the other 3' of stock.

I'm thinking very seriously of forge welding 3 pieces of 80CRV2 together to get the required thickness to draw out the width.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

No reason you can't, it's what a smith 100 years ago would have done, except probably out of about 20 pieces of scrap. :p

Thanks, we'll see how it goes. Good thing I've got a surface grinder, it makes precision welds easier.
