In April I'm spending a week with the in-laws at their house in Cape Coral Florida. This is the first vacation I've taken without our son in like 10 years so I don't even know what to do on a vacation these days. On the other hand, since he's not going, we don't have to do the Disney World or Bush Gardens type stuff.

What should I do in this area of the state? I am renting a car for the week so I can get around.

What are some good relatively cheap restaurants? I like casual "pub" style places more than white linen (I'm hoping to live in shorts and tee shirts).

my grandparents had a place in ft meyers and later sanibel growing up

edison museum
sanibel island/ding darling nwr. great beach. captiva is also supposed to be nice.
naples. was always very nice. have not been in 20+yrs.

fishing is great.

no idea on restaurants.

captiva is very nice, ft meyers beach was great the last time I was there, plenty of little bars/cafe's on the water. Cayo Costa is beatiful, but a state park, with huts right on the gulf, not sure if you are lookin to get away that much. if so the ferry goes there twice a day if i remember correctly (word of warning, it is remote, I believe the Seals train there)

I have relatives there, I vote for the edison mueseum then hi tail it down to sanibel. Thought that's probably boring for a 10 year old.

Thanks for the replies my friends. Keep them coming.

Are there any good knife stores in the area? Although I'm flying and wouldn't want to risk someone stealing anything nice from my luggage, my Father-in-law will be driving up to Vermont in the summer so I could have him bring any goodies I buy up here for me.
