Found a Sandvik marked axe head....

We've had it at my parents forever and it's been beaten on. I was thinking of cleaning it up and using it in my rotation with an Autine forest axe and my Gränsfors-Bruks Hunter. IIRC the Sandvik axes could be fairly nice steel, although I have no idea how old or young this guy is. Hell, you cannot have too many axes as we know, but I do not want to put time into a root chopper if I don't have to. My S&N Hudson pattern head still needs a handle....

Also have a PLUMB Victory hatchet that doesn't look too awful as well. It could use a refresh!

Any idea what steel type it is? Also I noticed the head has been pinned through the handle using a brass pin which was then peened over on either side........is this common? I've never seen it before. I've never even heard of anyone doing this.

The pin was probably the owner's doing, not factory. No idea on the steel type but it takes and holds an edge well.

I wouldn't think the head affected at all by a hole drilled through after I re-hang it and grind all the funk off it.

Not common, but not unheard of either. I believe we've talked about race axes having pins for safety considerations, for example. Mainly it keeps the head from slipping, and I have been tempted to try it at times :).

Clearly. Just never have come across that, and I'm in TX to boot so to know remotely anything about an axe is a minor miracle. No tradition of woodsmanship needed in cattle and pump jack land.

pins are not uncommon
there might be a thread somewhere about pinning the Marbles double bit cruiser as the heads were prone to slipping off

I do not get it. Are you saying that the handle was ruined and so rather than replacing it they drilled a hole and put in a brass pin?
