This may provide some info for you.
Unfortunately no mention of steel type, but check around on the web. This was the first hit when I performed a google search.

I don't personally have one, but I have heard only good things about the Frank B. knivs.

As far as bladeplay.com goes, I have ordered from them before, and so has a friend of mine, with no problems.

They are the best made of this type of knife. Bladeplay is a great guy, but you will save $20 if you buy from Stu ( go to Talkbalde.com and look up favorite sellers.....) Stu is #1 on price and service !! His link is www.Knifeknives.com/Data2/Fortunesales.html he is STU 711 there...click on the knifeknives link

Thanks guys, :)
The website puukkoman mentioned states that the blade on the "classic" is "W.1.4034 HRC 56 Stainless Steel."
I am not sure exactly how good that is, but at least now I have more info.
I will keep searching for more, however... ;)

Cam at Bladeplay is horrible to deal with ... a child in a man's world. Here are the emails outlining my problems. Bt the way, the italian stil is cheap looking and the auto does not function.

You are a crook. You said you didn't get your first knife so we shipped you another. You signed for it (with a nonsense name) and now you have disputed the charge on your credit card. You have two of our knives and our money. Congrats. I hope two little knives are worth the price of your integrity.

Wow Cam, I was going to email you to find out where we stand, now I realize you are no longer worth the $59.00. I did receive the italian stil. without difficulty, and the quality was junk and I did not complain, that was the first knife. You are not worth my time trying to resolve this. I shall post this chain on all available forums to allow people to judge your integrity Cam.

We sent you another knife in good faith and you had apparently already contacted your credit card company. Disputes are almost impossible to sort out. You have the Smith & Wesson (possibly two), you will get your money back from the credit card company and my company is out another $40 (the amount we are charged for a contested credit card bill) I am sick of people using a credit card dispute to resolve things like this.
>>I was going to email you to find out where we stand, now I realize you are no longer worth the $59.00

Maybe you were, but you didn't. And what a ridiculous statement- I'M not worth the $59. What does that mean? YOU have our knife, YOU have our money and YOU have it backwards. You're not worth the $59.00.

Please feel free to post this on every forum you can find.

When you post, be sure people understand one important thing:

It's not worth your time to try and reolve things with me, but you'll spend ten times that amount of time posting about your hurt feelings on forums. Hopefully you find some comfort in revenge.

"You are a crook...", this is no way to approach a repeat customer. I did not hear from you for more then 10 days so I disputed the charge after having not received the Smith & Wesson; a few days later, I signed the slip and left it in the Mail box so the postal worker would leave it in my side door the next day, which he did; making fun of my legal signature is also not endearing. Perhaps a communication breakdown has occurred and I am now feeling defensive.

There you have it, charming character with shit products.

If you google W.1.4034 Stainless Steel it will list saluc.com, a ball bearing vendor who has a chart listing compositions of various steels. This one is .28% carbon, so pretty low for blade steel. It's about halfway between 420J2 and AUS 4. By way of comparison, the carbon content for AUS-8 is .7, ATS-34 is 1.05, and S30V is 1.45.

So don't expect good edge-holding, but depending on your use, that might not matter.

Incidentally, I would have given a couple months of my busboy pay when I was 16 for a knife like that. My cousin had one that some male relative had brought back from WWII. Now that I could get one if I want, it doesn't interest me all that much. To me, any knife from Spyderco, Kershaw, Sog, or CRKT is 10 times better...stronger, sharper, and just better in every way. If you want a stilleto, Darrel Ralph makes some good ones, and no doubt there are others. I do still like the double guards those knives have.

For the buck, I'll go with a Cold Steel Ti-Lite without a doubt !!! especially the 6" model, awesome big folder , nice quality !!!! ;)

Cam is very reputable in the many times I have dealt with him. This should be moved to Good, Bad and Ugly.....The Italian stilettos are 420 or 440 and hand made knives of differing quailty. If you are into mass produced screwed together knives with perfect machine parts than don't think of buying hand made pinned together knives with horn=stag=wood handles as you will always be let down....

Not too sure where "PsyKo" is coming from but with this being his only post it's not too hard to guess.

I've dealt with Cam and the Bladeplay folks numerous times and with NO PROBLEMS ! ! !

They are a stand up bunch and I regularly send buddies to his website. As for the product, it's accurately described and Cam isn't trying to pull a fast one on anybody.

Just FYI, Bladeplay is for the affordable (read whatever you want into that word) knife junkie fix :) They also have BladeHQ for the top drawer makers/companies.

This is an old thread from 2006, resurrected by PsyKo who presumably found it with a search.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

PsyKo's  handle seems apt; Cam typically is one of the more reasonable dealers, and is often quick to fix something if he can. PsyKo  , with his one post, likely had no clue to what he was ordering, in the sense that handmade Italian autos will vary in their fit and function. Wutitiz likely has PsyKo pegged.
rats...

There's not much here to clarify, except for one point. "PsyKo" makes it sound like the knife he's talking about is an Italian style cheapie. The knife that went "missing" was a dual action Smith & Wesson ($59). We reshipped it for him and he decided to do a credit card charge back. We're out two knives, and he's going to get his money back. He obviously has no intention of reversing the charge back or sending back the knife. That makes him a crook in my book.

If you're going to make yourself look like a complete idiot then the handle "PsyKo" and a first post like this is a great way to start.

Good to see you Cam :)

We all know what PsyKo is about, too bad really but it's the price of doing business.

On the upside, I visit you site regularly for new goodies. Keep up the good work.

Sorry, but I have to say that the seller's position is more believable. It looks like you screwed them pretty good. You suck, dude.
