Been brooding about these for some time now.

As I live in the EU I can't examine their stuff first hand and their website does not have pictures, just some rather irritating whimsical sketch drawings...

Does anybody have a view on their gear? I like the look (I think..) of some of their packs, they appear to be quality old fashioned items, I want an old school style rucksack and I think these might be worth getting.

Anybody have some PHOTOS of their stuff, I've no idea what the colour of the bags is for instance. Drawbacks, strong points? Much appreciate your opinions:thumbup:

Email their customer service address - they are very fast to reply.

They told me that their illustrations are trying portray the color in the image below.

(The image comes from a Japanese dealer fro Frost River.)

I will be ordering one of these this week as soon as I make up my mind between medium and large.

Well built tough rucks. The are a tan brushed canvas and way overbuilt. I have two Duluth packs and after going over a Frost River at a recent outdoor show I had to order one. Decided on the Woodsman Pack. The fit is great and I can't say enough about them. I do agree that the website should have real pics. instead of the drawings.

You got a reply? I emailed them twice now and have yet to get a reply. I asked for some actual pics so I could see their stuff or if they had a dealer in my area. I like the look of their items and was thinking of ordering a few items but since I cannot get a reply it kind of put me off.

Polymath, thanks for your help and the links. These packs look excellent but perhaps bigger than I thought! The Woodsman or something small is what I'm after, the packs look very durable and probably age well.

I bought their Nessmuk pack. Very well put together. If you like canvas and leather packs, you'll love these. IMO the Nessmuk is the perfect day pack.

There's also Duluth Pack. I have their Hudson Bay pack (no longer offered, but it's the same as their Monarch #4 except it has two slip pockets and 4 D-rings on each side instead of the pockets).

Frost River is run by ex Duluth Pack employees. For traditional packs and bags, I very highly recommend both companies.

I got a very quick response about Frost River packs from mabel1960 on eBay. I think it's one of the owners of Frost River.

Anybody have a photo of the Nessmuk pack?

The Woodsman is too giant I've decided, need a small day pack so it could be the knapsack:thumbup:

The Frost River packs are an excellent investment at a decent price when compared with some of the other custom canvas packs. I also own several Duluth canoe packs (some are decades old), two of their daypacks, and one of their lumbar packs. At this time, my preference goes to the Frost River line of packs since they are able to provide all of their packs in waxed canvas as standard (Duluth will also build them at higher prices). And, their overall quality is every bit as good as Duluth, or some of the copies of the Duluth style packs. As one poster mentioned; some of Duluth Pack employees now work for Frost River...and it shows in the quality provided. Both companies build great packs, but in my opinion, you get more for your money with the Frost River packs. Either way, unless you are a youngster, chances are you will not wear out either the Duluth, or Frost River before your body wears out and you need to find other activities. :)

The photo shows some small canvas packs that I use often. The pack on the far left is one of Frost River's knapsacks. The next pack over is the Lumbar Pack by Duluth Pack. The last two are made by Wilde. With regards to the Frost River Knapsack; excellent light weight pack with plenty of traditional charm and comfort. It has a nice sized zippered pocket on the interior to keep things sorted out. A favorite when I want to travel light and fast.

Not a good photo.

Thanks for all your help!

I think this may become a long and expensive habit....

The Knapsack looks like an excellent starter for a day in the forest, the Nessmuk and that green Duluth pack look really good too and would be OK for a couple of days trek.
Just what I want!

Polymath, any idea what that knife is in the pic you enclosed? Looks alright!

If that is Dude in the picture which I pretty sure it is then it is likely a Skookum knife.

That is Dude in the photo and he is very fond of the Skookum.

However, I don't think that is a Skookum in the photo.
