I am a big fan of Gary Brommeland's leather bending talents. I was first introduced to him on another 'Guncentric' concealed carry sub-forum. Holster Maker Lou Alessi (RIP) recommended him highly. And, since I was very familiar with Lou's products having purchased several Concealed rigs from him in the past, I figured I'd give him a shot. To make a short story shorter, I bought two carry rigs from him and couldn't be happier. IMHO, they are some of the best concealment Holsters on the planet. I literally stake my life on it.
But, this thread isn't about Gary's Holsters, it's about a new product he has developed, his line of 'Gun Leather Strops'. Like everything Gary does, it's perfect. He has several different versions, a 'Hanging Strop', 'Bench Strop', a portable 'Pocket Strop', and another smaller version the 'Micro Strop'. All can be gotten 'Bare' or pre-loaded with Green and Black Oxide.
I purchased the Brommeland Gunleather SS18L Large Loaded Leather Sharpening Strop. It comes with a well thought-out Lanyard system for anchoring one end of the strop to a fixed structure (tree, pole, stationary child, etc.) and another, shorter lanyard for your hand on the other. The Strop came pre-loaded with Green Oxide (fine) on one side and Black Oxide (Course) on the other.
I had the opportunity to use it the other night on a few older knives that had been neglected. I'm here to tell you, after a few strokes on the 'Strop', they were all back to hair popping sharp. First up was a well-used Kit Carson Prototype Model 4, D2 blade.
But, I really wanted to know how it would work on a Scandi-Vex or modified Convex edge. Again, after a few strokes, my BRKT Mini-BushCrafter in 3V was back to being 'scary sharp'.
Before trying on the Scandi-Vex blade, I had a phone conversation with Gary and explained what I was trying to accomplish and he very quickly gave me some simple tips on how to achieve success. Sure enough, I followed his instructions to keep the Strop nice and tight and it was 'Miller time'.
I highly recommend the Brommeland Gun Leather Strops.
