This was a run that I had planned for a long time and finally pulled off. It's a 18 mile point to point run through some rugged, but beautiful country. The logistics are tough as you have to be picked up by boat on the Missouri (or turn around and run 18 miles back! :D). A buddy at work volunteered to shuttle us from the marina (where we would exit by boat) to the trailhead and then pick us up in his boat- thanks Gene!

The weather was near perfect- cool and cloudy, it threatened to rain several times, but never did. We dropped off our vehicle at the marina at 6:30 AM and arrived at the trailhead at 7:30, we told Gene to look for us around 1:00 PM. The trail starts at Refrigerator Canyon- a neat slot canyon w/ a small creek running through it, no keeping our feet dry here as the trail is in and out of the creek.

There is a pretty significant climb once out of the canyon, but it was switched back so nicely it was all runnable (albeit it slowly :))

The wildflowers were out in full force, lots of Indian Paintbrush and Lupine. Also some dense pockets of Arnica.

it threatened rain several times, but never fell on us :)

we made it to Bear Prairie, about the half way mark in pretty good time (a little over two hours)

As we approached Sacajawea Mountain the trail really faded, but was we were still able to pick up good enough. We had to drop into the rugged Meriwether Canyon, almost losing 4000' in six miles.

we found several little springs and seeps, so we were never short on water

leaving the Wilderness Area and only a mile to go :)

We ended up at the Missouri in just under 5 hours, we soaked our legs in the ice cold Missouri for about 15 minutes which really eases the inflammation. Just as we we were getting out of the water Gene showed up with his boat to shuttle us back

I can see why Lewis and Clark were so enamored with the area :)

Hey! Quit giving away all of the good spots! ;) Good job on not getting rained on, it has been pretty constant lately. Did you see any mountain goats? I used to see them quite a bit up Hogback but haven't in the last few years. Awesome pics as always!

Photos were nice and the trip really cool. I doubt I could physically do such a "run" even in a single day with the elevation changes. Glad you're in shape for such things.

thanks gents!

Did see a few goats close to the Refrigerator trailhead, lots of nice rocky cliffs :) The population seems pretty healthy in that area, but they haven't let any permits out for several years- not sure why????

I'd be in a real sorry state trying to run even half that these days. I'm not sure its just basic fitness 'cos I can do other stuff, but after about an hour I get shocking headaches. I used to think it was footwear, now I think it's more the brain bouncing up and down like a pea in a bucket.

Incredible scenery. But wait...18 mile run???? Impressive. I got winded just looking at the pics! If it was all downhill, and my body was stuffed in a barrel and pushed, I might be able to make it.

I must second Jason part about running 18 miles up those awesome and steep mountains...

thanks everyone :) I have a great run planned this coming weekend as well, a little higher in elevation, so hopefully the snow has receded enough to make it through

Gorgeous hike! I've been on 2 night backpacking trips, that suddenly turned into 1 day backpacking trips because of the rain. As soon as it started to pour our group hauled ass and did 2 days worth of hiking in just 1 so we could get home lol. Its been nearly a year since I've been out backpacking. Kinda miss it.
