Are there any companies in the US that sell Argentine Gaucho knives? Not the fancy models, just the regular carbon steel knives used by the average Gaucho? Thanks.

I haven't even seen them in Mexico and we're closer. I think your best bet is either to go to Argentina and buy it yourself or to find someone from Argentina and have that person buy it and send it. It is quite expensive to send something from Argentina to the US, I think the price doubles.

I'm not qualified to comment on how 'authentic' they are, but the Boker Gaucho knives are made in Argentina.

Wife bought me one for a gift years back, and it looks and feels well-made.

Made by Böker® in Argentina, it is forged for the Argentine market. The handle material is 'European' antler from the Red Deer imported from Europe well over 100 years ago. The blade steel is 440A at 56-58 Rc. The brown leather sheath is made in the Gaucho style, no belt loop, but a flap or tab to hold the sheath above the belt or sash when slipped through it. Measures 9" tip to butt and weighs 3.4 oz.

Not in the US, but I've had a few from Mission of Argentina shipped here that were nice. 1070 I think.

You won't get any problem for posting just pictures.

While on a whitewater paddling trip in Chile/Argentina in 2003 I picked up a 'gaucho set' at a local hardware store for my Dad - knife/fork set. I can say first hand that some of the farmers down there do carry them. Thought it made a cool gift.

A couple years later, I picked up a couple of the Boker gaucho sets from AG Russell, made in Argentina. They're pretty much what you get down there, if that's what you're looking for.

Beautiful blades, by the way, Barth. Would these damascus knives be too expensive for the average gaucho?

There are several different types of "gaucho" (they've been gone for quite a while...) knives. My favourite criollo knife maker is Mariano Gugliotta, his work was featured in Tactical Knives a while ago. He makes excellent hard use knives. http://mgblades.com/

I wrote a short, very, very basic article about Argentine criollo knives in 2008 for some British friends. You guys might find it useful. I follow the categories suggested by Abel Domenech (an Argentine author and knife collector), since his research is, in my opinion, the best available.

It's a bit over the word limit to post here, but you can read it as a PDF, here's the link: http://malloryoutdoors.com/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=16

Franciscomv really Abel Domenech is the best.Your text in PDF is a good read, very good, congratulations.

Trent Rock was close with the boker ex. boker had a factory in Argentina for many years & even furnished bare blades to be handled & finished out by local makers. of course argentina & brazil both have great custom makers. if one is buying vendor knives make sure you are'nt getting tourist junk. anybody with a little blade knowledge can tell the good stuff from the junk.i've been fprtunate to examine some beautiful knives brought back by an engineer.
