GEC 2009 Production Totals

Boy, are you on top of things, Mike. I was just on the website at around 4 this afternoon, and it wasn't there then. Thanks for the heads up!

I ran across the '09 totals earlier today too, Mike. One was an amusing surprise: only 33 "executive" whittlers were made in primitive bone, and you sold me your last one, which turned out to be s/n 33! :)

I have sold a lot that I wish I had back now that I have seen the totals... Some really short runs that I had most or all that I should have put in the kids collections....

One of the fun aspects of GEC knives is the speculation.

It really amazes me that they can make money making such short runs and such a small number of knives overall. Especially given that their prices are very reasonable for the high level of quality and workmanship.

They aren't a huge company, but they also made batches of contract knives for other companies; those don't show up on the totals list.

I was thinking the same thing. It might be a good product line for investors. If they ever become popular they will be instantly rare.

Dennis, you're bound to have a few rare ones when you buy every one that comes out!! :D

I'm just jealous, cause I'm havin' trouble keepin' up with ya!

I have a couple of rare ones, but I sure can't afford to buy one of everything they make.

In any case, I buy the ones I like, and I'm having a great time.

all things have limits & my budget is also affected. ditto to joebob in that personal preference is also my criteria in model selection. even a rare pattern is not desirable if it's a dog in the beholders eyes.you guys bet me to the punch so i have to work hard in an attempt to equal your efforts.

Ok, somebody help me out here.

I have this knife. (Photo used with the permission of GEC (Chris))

The 2009 Production List published by GEC list it as "Tortoise Shell Acrylic 4 pcs. Unserialized Plain Shield". However, my knife has serial #46 on it and the tube it came in has "250109J" Tortoise Shell 46" on it.

Am I missing something??? It wouldn't be the first time.

They usually only serial number the first 50 knives. The ones after that won't have numbers. Also, there will sometimes be short runs without serial numbers at all; like the fixed blades, or some of the recent GEC brand toothpicks, as examples. They also will sometimes produce knives where the shield is blank, and doesn't say "Tidioute".

So, looks like they made 4 with plain shields, and they weren't serial numbered, in addition to the regular production run.

Ok, I hear you but they don't have that knife listed under any other category. Sooooooo, it would seem that their "2009 Prodiction Table" is incomplete otherwise, they would have that knive listed with so many serial numbered knives produced as they do for other knives.

I talked to her about that exact knife yesterday. There were several more that I had in stock that weren't on her list; thus it needs a little fine tuning. Many times there are very short runs that they change a little something on to finish out a larger run. I am going thru my stock this weekend to pull some of the really short runs out for my kids collections.

I've got the same one! #28 here. Carrying it today. Would rather an unserialized plain shield one, but that sounds rarer and harder to come by. The tortoise shell acrylic is beautiful and hard to capture in a photo.

Thanks for that information Mike.

I really like that Tortoise Shell Acrylic and wish they'd use it on more of their knives. I know where I can get my hands on a Congress with that Tortoise Shell Acrylic but unfortunately, the Congress pattern doesn't appeal to me.

ddml: You are right. That Tortoise Shell Acrylic is beautiful. One of the reasons that I like it is that yellow is my favorite colored handle and the Tortoise Shell has yellow in it.
