Greetings,

I am new to this type of forum, but find some of the information invaluable. I have a quick request for opinions on a general duty fixed blade.

I would like a general duty fixed blade. I would prefer that this not look like a tactical/fighting blade, but I would like for it to stand up if needed in that capacity. I would also like to keep the price realistic as it will be in a variety of environments (some wet), and I don't want to ruin a true piece of art. I prefer a made in the USA blade, but I am open to options.

I am thinking about the benchmade outlander (BM-180) , Greco Companion, Helle Eggen

Can anyone provide opinions on these models, especially the Greco

Thanks,

Chris

gdtrfb, welcome the benchmade 180 is the outbounder I like the knife design it will make a decent utility knife and you have the choice of 440C or D2.since you're worried about rust the 440c is more rust resistant though the D2 will hold an edge better and costs about $20 more.they even come with a fairly good sheath.
if you have a knfe store that carries a good variety you should handle several and get what you like best because everyones taste is different.good luck hope you find what you want.
I forgot to add the greco is a really heavy duty knife the one I have is 1/4 A2 steel tough knife but I prefer the outbounder for most uses.the greco cub companion is a better choice for everday use than the full size it is 3/16 A2.

I have some Grecos in his current 8670 (carbon) steel. Great knives for the $.If you don't need a big blade, his Dangler series are hard to beat.
The Eggen is less HD than Greco, which is not to say lightweight. The laminated blade is stainless with a thin carbon core that is scary sharp, and easy to keep that way. Classic design.
Might also suggest a Spyderco Moran drop point, V10 steel, great sheath.

thanks for the responses

I'll have to see what is available locally to get a feel for them. i'll probably get more than one and just put them in a rotation with folders.

Spyderco makes some good ones. The Perrin and Temperance come to mind. Fallkniven also makes excellent fixed blades. A little big for EDC, but the Becker line up offers a lot of bang for the buck as well.

I'd like to throw the Swamp Rat Howling Rat in the mix. I just got this knife, and can't stop using it. It's a small knife with big capabilities. The best $88 you'll spend.

Check out Bob Dozier's knives. Awesome working blades with incredible sheaths. All at a price that won't break the bank.
