Hello,

Found this knife in my collection the other day. On the handle George Washington's signiture is written in blue ink. I saw it in one book I bought, the info was very vague. It said reproductions were made of this knife and to find an original would be a great find. (thats it!) Can anyone provide me with a date or possible value.

The blade is marked Camillus Cutlery Co. Camillus NY.

Thanks

Steve

This looks like an older, inexpensive version of the recently produced George Washington pen knife.

A bit of history here... as a boy, George's mother gave him the knife as a gift, a reward, really, for not joining the British navy against her wishes. A reward for being obediant to her wishes. Years later, at Valley Forge, General Washington still carried the little quill knife (the knife was made for sharpening the quills used to write at the time. He was down and out that nasty winter, and was on the verge of resigning his command. A subordinate reminded him of the knife he carried, of why he was given it, and how it related to him being obedient to the wishes of his young country, and the Continental Congress. It was his duty to remain in command, he was told, as it was his duty not to run off and join the navy. Shortly thereafter, General Washington had a great idea concerning some British mercenaries...

Thanks Phil.

Good stuff!

I've heard nothing but bad things about camillus and their customer service as well...

Thought I'd give it a shot though!

The George Washington knife was introduced in 1932 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth. This knife is a replica of the actual knife that Washington was given by his mother.

Today this knife is valued at $25 to $150, depending upon condition.
