Ok, I'm new to the forum, but did search before posting this and I've given up. I've had this folding Gerber knife in my safe for years, in prime condition in a leather sheath. Both the sheath and the knife have the numbers 97223 on it. The sheath also has Gerber Portland, ORE U.S.A. (with the number) on the loop. The knife has the button you push to open it and an ivory handle (or plates on each side). It also has U.S. Pat. 3942249 on the button. I've had it since 1984 and it was old then.

It has never been used or sharpened. Even the leather smells new! Any ideas of what the value of this knife might be?

Thanks,
Jim

If it looks like the knife below you have a vintage Gerber Paul knife with ivory micarta handles - they were first made in 1979, I believe. The Paul's are high quality knives made during the hey-day of Gerber cutlery.

I've seen them (in good to excellent condition) sell for $150 to $250 bucks. You might keep an eye on ebay and see what they are currently going for.

This is exactly the knife I have only without the box. I do have the leather sheath with it (which is obviously new, as well). I was helping at a gun show back around 1982 or 83 and the dealer had this at his table. It was new at that time (never purchased). I've had it in my safe ever since. I thought it would bring more than that, though.

Hey, now I have an official name for it and a good estimate of its value. Thanks for your help.

Gerber made them a couple of times. To tell which one you have open the knife turn it over (edge up) and look at the inside of the knife. There may be some dots stamped on the bottom of the knife. No dots is the first issue, one dot the second and 2 dots is the third year of issue. The fewer dots the more desirable the knife.

Ok, I just looked (and took a picture which I'll post here if I can figure it out) and there are no dots anywhere, inside, outside, anywhere on the knife. The only thing I see further down inside of the open knife may be the number "1" possibly (without the quotes, of course). So, this is a good thing?

Hi, again! Ok....I haven't heard back about the dots, but there is definitely a number 1 inside of the handle below the blade. Does this increase the value of the knife we have? If we were going to sell it on Ebay (if that's the place to sell it), anybody have a suggested starting price for it? Thanks for any help! FYI, it has never been sharpened and is in perfect shape, no scratches, marks or anything on it. It's a Paul Knife, model 2PM, with Gerber leather sheath, also in mint condition.
