I'm new here, not sure how to post a link,,but what do you guys think about this knife, where can I get one and how much should I have to pay.. I'm just a novice I have a few Benchmade and Buck Knives but this knife looks pretty cool.

Thanks in advance for any feedback..

been doing a little research looks like about 50/50 on who likes the knife and who doesn't on this forum,, any help appreciated

FWIW, I had a couple of these, and they all failed a moderate spine whack test.

Which means the lock could potentially fail if you accidentally struck the back of the blade against something hard while using it..

thanks Grampa,,sounds like there is a problem with the lock,,,got any suggestions of another knife along this line,,wouldn't mind spending more $ for better quality,,

If you really like this knife and don't mind fixed blades look into the Boker Applegate Fairairn Combat line of knives. They are way better IMHO.

wanted a folder for just for everyday carry,,you guys have pretty much talked me out of this one though. Its a pretty knife but apparently the quality is poor.

You can make a pretty sure bet that 90% of what gerber makes is trash.

The other 10% is made up of the the Gerber Axes, folding saws, and the LST Magnum/LST Magnum Jr.

Not the latest and greatest steel but they take a nice edge and lock up alright for a $16 knife (LST Jr.) . AFIK, still US made too.

How many of you guys trashing it actually has one? It's got a rotolock to lock liner in place, I don't see how it can fail your spine whack unless you destroy it. And the full size does have a clip. The actual quality is great, solid lock and solid assembly.

That said I don't like mine, but that's only because it's too big for a folder IMO. If it's smaller it would be perfect, and would be my EDC of choice.

The only difference from what I can gather is one is half serrated with the sharktooth tip, one is plain edge, everything else is the same, so it's really your preference.

But you sure you want something that big thou? Before I bought the applegate I thought 4.5" blade is okay (SOG is even bigger, 5"), but when I actually had it in my hand, it's just huge.

There is the "covert" version of the Applegate Fairbairn folder, which is a little smaller, 3.8 instead of 4.5, perfect size. The covert also has an ambidextrous pocket clip for point down carry and is available with black blade (it has a cooler blade shape than the bigger version too).

I have a black A/F covert and I like it a lot. It's made out of 154 CM, just like Emerson's blades and performs really well. The roto-lock is a little switch you press with your thumb, that blocks the locking liner and keeps it from opening (kinda like crkt's "auto-lawks", but better.). When you use the knife, you hold your thumb on the roto-lock, keeping that one from yielding, so the lock is really safe. I really like the handle shape too.

The SOG Pentagon/Spec. Elite folder is cheaper, but hear with someone who actually has those knives, before you make a decision. I haven't got one, but I've tested it in the store and I think it seems really awkwardly big with a 5 inch blade for a folder. But check for yourself.

The large one has the "roto-lock" also...
I like mine and have no problems with it.
It is, however, too big for comfortable pocket carry (IMO).

I prob have about 10 knives that I actually rotate as far as every day carry knives,,one of them is a benchmade rukus which is a pretty big knife,,most of them are 3" or so. Just thought the Applegate or the Pentagon would be a good addition when I wanted to carry a big folder.

If a big folder is what you look for go ahead, the handle is thicker than others like markksr said, but it's really comfortable to to grip on.

Yeah I know, but at the time I didn't think the one I ordered is that big. If only I got the covert version instead... Although I'm trying to remedy the situation by selling it on local classified, but no takers so far.
