Here is the two Gerbers I recently got. Haven't had much chance to use them yet, but I can say that the larger Camp axe chops better, but the small Gator is very nimble and seems like it could be a nice piece to carry along. If any one has any questions I'll try to answer , and here is some pics....

And to be clear that razer edge did not come from the factory. Both Gerber hatchets were sharp out of the box though, and it was easy to get them to shaving sharp.

When I first started looking into this style hatchet, I was looking at the Fiskers. Most reviews are very favorable on the Fiskers X7 (14") and the X15 (23.5") hatchets. However my preference was for something in between those 2 sizes. Turns out Fiskers does make a X10 (18"), but it is only available in the UK, I could have gotten it from Amazon but the shipping was nearly the cost of the hatchet.

So I was actually looking for another alternative, when I discovered that Gerbers Axes are made by Fiskers, and the Gerber Camp Axe 2 is 18 inch's the same as the Fiskers X10.

Bought the "Gator Combo" on clearance at the Wal.

Package says "KNIFE STORES IN HANDLE" but much finer print on the back says not to have knife in handle when using the axe. Seems there was a federal safety recall in 2011 due to the consequences of knives flying our of handles when chopping. A flexible rubber cap over the end of the knife to increase security has been added since, but the lawyers will have their little warnings. (DANGER: This sharpening tool causes knives to become sharp which may lead to a cutting hazard.")

The edge was quite dull due to consisting of a large burr that is uniformly rolled over. A few minutes with a file fixed that problem.

Knife is very sharp. Wish it had a sheath to protect it when out of the axe handle. I'll have to arrange something.

Just holding the axe and trying a few chopping motions, the handle seems too short. The top of my hand in a normal grip is only 3/4" below the bottom edge of the axe blade. Not much leverage. I could use a three-finger grip to improve leverage. HAve to see how it works when the game is over.

I hope you hope these can serve you well 👍
I prefer a real axe or hatchet, so I'm just going to hold my tongue and not name everything that sux about the fiskars axes.

All power to you! There are lots of us 'old timers' out there interested in hearing about how these modular plastic designs long term 'hold up' through exposure to weather (especially temperature and sunlight) and occasional abuse.
