I'm looking at getting one. It says the head is will not come off or loosen for life ????

Any experience with one coming off or loosening ?

Thanks in advance.

I've got one that I brag about whenever a thread pops up. I was distrusting when I first picked it up, but after beating the crap out of it, it's still in fine condition. I'd be really impressed if you were able to break one when using it normally. I've never heard a report of one breaking, or of a head coming loose.

They are definitely the best value in a chopper/hatchet at $20. Great balance, easily sharpened quality steel, lightweight.

I think that you just opened up a can of worms on this one. :) There is a lot of people that use fiskar hatchets.
I for one, have no complaint so far. I beat the living crap out of mine and it still keeps on going.

I have two of the hatchets, one Packaxe and one with a 14" handle. i really like both of them, each for their own reasons. the small packaxe is very easy to carry on your belt as a knockin around the woods hatchet. the larger one is a real work horse, comfortable to swing and really splits wood nicely.

only one issue makes the small packaxe not the "perfect" carry hatchet. the handle is maybe too short. even being short, it still works well for me. However, if you are in need of a lighter carry hatchet with a decent length of hadle, i suggest the Buck axe with the hollow plastic handle. Santa brought one for my 11 yr old son this last christmas and he let me borrow it. feels real nice and is just right for carrying and working. a word of warning though, the Buck hatchet comes with a plastic cover/sheath for the axe. it will not fit on a belt like the Gerbers with their nice nylon full cover sheaths. the buck axe has a hole thought it on the head that i put a carabiner though the hole and it then clips to a backpack or onto a belt loop.

best of luck - Eric

they make great stuff at very reasonable prices. i own two and love them.

Cool.
The "beat the crap out of 'em" is what I like to hear.
I have no intention of beating too hard.

I'm re-outfitting this year and want to do it less expensively. My family is down to my income only now(by our choice) and $$$ is much more of an issue for me than it has in the past.

Thanks for the input.

I bought one a couple months ago. I kept the reciept, because I was sure I was going to bring it back. But not so, Real darn hard plastic. It came with a flat grind, that I tore up real quick, but after giving it a good convex edge it chops really good. Definatly lighter that my wood handled hatchet, and stuff can be stored in the hollow handle. So far, so good.

I saw a documentary about edged tools once and they showed a fiskars with the head placed on the sidewalk and the end of the handle on the ground. Theyb then ran over it witha truck. The shaft bent about 90 deggrees and it just sprung right back into shape. Incredibely tough.

I like em. Thinking about getting their 3/4 pro chopper. I don't have any wood to cut, just want one.;)

I've got the mini Fiskars belt axe. Tremendous little chopper, very practical size and sheath, just right for a day hike or keeping in the car for picnics and barbecues etc. VERY TOUGH;VERY REASONABLE PRICE: What more can you want???

Where are you guys finding the nylon belt full cover sheaths for the 14" Fiskars hatchets? Do they have them for the small axes too?

Thats a great little axe. I've had mine for a few years now and it still cuts very good. I would definatly recomend it.

Well
I guess I can try THROWING my Gerber hatchet now!!
I've been afraid to because of the plastic mounting system
After seeing these posts I am gonna give her a throw next time I go camping
If it breaks I will be sure to report to this forum with full pictorial evidence of course...

Im curious about the outside temperature during this experiment. Plastics tend to get more rigid and fragile when it's cold.

It's not 'just plastic' but a specially prepared lexan from my understanding. It's extremely durable, and I've never heard of a handle on a Fiskars or Gerbers breaking since the product came on the market. If anyone is aware of such an instance I'd sure like to see it. Amiga, once you try the brand you will see it is not 'cheap plastic' but very durable.

Spooky, is the Colt pouch your Fiskars cover too? Where did you source it?

I honestly can't understand why you would deliberately abuse your tools by throwing them. If you want to throw an axe, there are axes specifically designed for it (and which require a specific technique) but hatchets are not meant to be thrown.

but hatchets are not meant to be thrown
What!!!!???
I got books and books on The Mountain Men and Native Americans in general that describe throwing the tomahawk/hatchet
That is why I got into hatchets and knives in the first place
You can read my FIRST post here on BF regarding that story
I was at a Mountain Man rendevouz in Creede, CO and participated in a friendly tomahawk throwing contest
Then I bought a nice, forged, hand made hatchet from one of the re-creators
That was the beginning of the end for me on EBAY

If you can find me some books where it describes throwing an AXE let me know
That is all logger man sh1t...Not mountain man
Plus takes to much energy throwing a big ol' axe

I use my hatchets for "normal" stuff
Then after lunch I like to THROW it for fun!!!
My goal is the 2010 Cold Steel Challenge championship
I am accepting sponsors at this time ;)
Maybe I will wear a Blaldeforums.com t shirt when I compete ;)
Hhehehehe

Please no Cold Steel hating in this thread
There is another one with like 2000 replies for that
The contest is about 40 miles from me in Ventura
I missed watching the 2007 one because I forgot to mark my dam calender!!

jh205,

I see you are in the process of becoming exposed and accustomed to Trent U. Rock's own very unique brand of humor...:p
