I've had this little Gerber for probably close to twenty years and I hate to see it become useless. Anyway to fix this?

Yes, they do have a lifetime warranty. The LST model is one of their best sellers, and is a tough little knife. The U.S.A. made stuff is pretty good, although I don't care for the looks of the stainless and plastic modern knives. A few of my co-workers in the machine shop before I retired were not knife people, but they carried the LST's because the Dick's sporting goods down the road had them cheap. I watched them abuse those little LST's and I was impressed at how well they stood up to heavy handed use.

Cool thanks man! Gerber was handing these out like candy for free at the Portland sportsman's show in '91 I think.

If that knife has given you twenty years of service, for what it is, I'd say it's had a long and fullfilling life. I'll bet it could tell a lot of stories (I can just see the years of pocket-wear on it). I've never used Gerbers warranty service but there is the possibility that they would consider it cheaper to just give you a new knife rather than take to time to rebuild that one. But I wonder if simply buying a new one would be cheaper for you than the shipping costs.

In any event, thanks for sharing and for the pics. I always like to hear about inexpensive knives giving years of good service. If you send it back to Gerber, please let us know how it all turns out. I for one at least would be interested to know.

I have used Gerbers customer service on a Gerber Companion that the scissors broke on. They repaired "MY" knife and had it back to me in about 2 weeks. By far the quickest time I have ever had on any warranty work.

another option would be to have a maker put some new scales on it. G10 or carbon fiber would be strong enough and quick to make.

Send it back to Gerber. If they've stopped producing it they will send you a credit voucher and a catalog. I sent back a Gerber Touche' which they stopped producing in the late 80's early 90's and they sent me a voucher for $80 and a catalog. NICE

Interesting..... well considering I got the knife for free I doubt they would give me enough to make it worth my while.... I'll call them and see what they say.

Id all most hate to send it on to them just to have them send you a voucher or a new knife you have too much history with that blade. Time to send it to your Knife Hall of Fame and bring a up rookie from the minors and see how it will do, and give birth to a new up and coming Hall of Farmer. Just remember to take "Ol Blue" out from time to time and give it some pocket time once or twice a year.

Well said! I vote for this.

Ha! Yeah I hear ya. I'm thinkin if they will repair it I'll go for it. If they just want to give me a voucher I'll just keep ol' blue.

Yup. New scales would be super easy. Pick out the color of G10 you like and you can find lots of people on the forums who would pimp it for you.

I think you should just retire it for sentiments sake, and all the years it served you faithfully. Then just go buy a new Gerber ultralight LST. Almost the same knife, just a tad longer, as theydon't make the microlight LST anymore. It may take another 20 years to wear that new one out.

Got a response from Gerber today.

Here is the email----

Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades. Unfortunately, your knife is long out of production and any repairs/replacements are not available. The only option for your knife would be to send it in, and we would give you a credit of $17.30 toward purchasing another product. If you wish to obtain warranty service, send the product, along with an explanation of the defect, your name, address, and phone number, to the address below:

Gerber Legendary Blades Attn: Service Dept. 14200 SW 72nd Ave Portland, OR 97224

It is recommended that you send your package via UPS, FedEx, or insured mail. Turnaround time is approximately two to four weeks. Return freight is incurred by Gerber Blades.

Information regarding the warranty can be found on the Gerber website at http://www.gerbergear.com/Meet-Gerber/Support/Warranty-Info. The FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page can answer many of your questions.

Sincerely,

Tammara Harvey Consumer Services Representative | Gerber Phone: (503) 403-1219 | Fax: (503) 403-1103 www.gerbergear.com

Well, at this point I'd say that you need to decide how much you are attached to the knife. You could take the $17.50 (Minus shipping back to Gerber), have the scales replaced like previously mentioned, or you could keep the knife and just retire it as a momento.

Well for twenty bucks its not worth it. What I find odd is the email contradicts itself. It states that the knife is too old and repairs are not possible.... then it says if I want I can send it in for repairs....

It's a typical canned email.
