hey guys, i realize that most of you probably don't go for the lower end knives like this, but i was wondering about your opinions on the knife. in case you don't know what i am talking about, here is a link to a site that has it:
http://hookedontoys.com/knives-multi-tools/fixed-blade-knives-46522.htm

from what i can tell, it looks like a good knife, and feels comfortable in the hand (i checked out the under-the-counter that they had at the local sporting goods store). based on my short experience with the knife, it is sharp, and has a nice thick spine. the handle is a little slender, but it would be good with a cordwrap i think. i like the gut hook as opposed to the standard drop point because i can use the hook to limb small trees and saplings. i suppose i could use it to skin and gut etc (i really should learn how to...) too if needed.

Hey siguy, about the freeman, I own one and its not bad. But if you want the freeman, get the drop point version. The gut hook comes horrible dull, and its not fun to sharpen. I tried grinding it off, but I lost patience with it. If you want a knife with a gut hook, I unfortunatly suggest getting a knife from another company. I was sold on gerber a few years ago, but they've "gone down hill" And unfortunatly dont make the same quality they use to. But for 50-60$ its not a bad knife(in drop point) On the other hand I also own a harsey hunter and love it, I have no idea what the steel is, but I bought it when I was starting out on knives and its held up well. The edge could be regound(only for a more "cutter" than anything, like I did) but other than that Its a good knife.

okay then, thanks

i was also looking at the drop point version, but then i read a review of the revolver knife on this forum, and it mentioned being able to use a gut hook to limb small trees more quickly and easily. that is what gave me the idea to try for the gut hook version.

well, thanks for the input. i will get the drop point when i find it for sale.

No problem.

Like I said, the hook on the freeman was so dull, but I bet the hook on the revolver is much sharper, and they heat treat much better than gerber nowadays'

But the freeman makes an ok all round knife, its a good size, and if your willing to spend a little more, the bechmade model 190 is a Great step up, the D2 is hard to sharpen. But like they say d2 takes a ok edge and holds it.
