Gerber KICK Axe?

A friend of mine owns a different brand of take-apart axe. After a little chopping, everything started to loosen. After more prolonged use, it was very loose. It didn't break but looks like the joints will eventually fail.

Although the Gerber folding axe is very cool looking and an ingenious design, I can't see the advantages of the folding feature outweighing the many compromises necessitated by that feature.

Problem lies in the weight of the hatchet...it is too light to be an effective chopper. When I was a scout I just had to have one of the Buck hatchets...it was nice and lightweight but cutting through even a 4 inch limb would wear you out because there was not enough head weight to do any good...all the cutting power had to come from your arm. I would think you would be getter off with something like the CRKT M.A.K.-1 that you could baton wood with. I prefer my Woodsman's Pal as I can chop, baton, dig, even use it as an impromptu ice axe.

Looks REALLY cool, but that locking mechanism worries the heck out of me. I'd at least like to see some kind of sliding bar lock, or something to slide over the hinged part to keep it from folding. Anything to make it next to impossible for the handle to close up on your fingers during a hard swing.

The guys over in Wilderness & Survival are having some fun tearing it to bits. Bring your beer and popcorn!
