What are some of your thoughts about the Gerber LMF II ASKEK? Not really too concered about it in the aspect of self sharpening sheath but I have not heard much about this knife and we all know how reliable the KA-BAR is. My uses will be mostly hunting and camping. Thanks for any advice. Maybe even suggestions on other like knives.

Hi and welcome to BladeForums.

The Gerber is really designed for tactical use.

For camping or hunting, IMO you should consider these:

Fallkniven F1
Ontario RAT3, TAK1, RAT5, RAT7
Ranger Knives RD4, RD6, RD7 and even possibly the RD9
Any knife made by Bark River which would suit your purposes.
Ka Bar Impact (I particularly like the 1464 Model) & Ka Bar Short Heavy Bowie
You can also look at the Bob Dozier knives at www.agrussell.com

A lot depends also on whether you'll be doing heavy camp chores and/or chores like skinning game.

I'm sure you'll receive many good suggestions in this thread; I hope I've given you a few.

I was debating the same two knives. Finally decided on the Ka-bar D2 Extreme. Just ordered it the other day, so I can't tell you first hand whether or not I made a good choice. I am anxious to watch this thread to see how the other forum members respond.

There is a few videos testing the LMF. It help up great, and got a great review. I would personally take it over the Kabar. but i've had problems with kabar in the past. Both would get the job done.

+1 all the knives in his list are great camp knives, I really like the F1 and Ranger knives myself

Both are great knives. I have an LMF II, and it's a very useful, and a tough knife. For 100 dollars its a great deal.

in my humble opinion the LMF II is far superior to the standard K-bar. the K-bar has leather washers that shrink and loosen, there-by loosen the hilt.

i own 2 LMF II and it is my main hunting/camping/roadtrip knife. they have many features and are one of the few affordable serious production knives that can take hard use.

here's some testimonials:

if active soldiers in a combat area swear by it, thats good enough for me.

I'll concur with Rifon2. It's not really meant to be a sporting knife. There are a lot of other knives out there that are better for camp use.

I have an LMF II, which I think is great for it's intended purpose, but I think you'd be happier with something else for camping and general outdoor use.

I'll add the Benchmade Rant to the list of suggestions. The new ones are made in the US, of D2 steel. Probably about the same price as the LMF II, but not as 'tactical' and not as heavy. Still great for camping and general use.

Have you thought about Becker? They are made by Kabar and are quite good. The BK2 is in the same size range, but stouter and of better quality.Just my opinion,of course.

ma921811, what do you really expect to do while hunting and camping? Egress from crashed helicopters? Take out some sentries? Escape from deep behind enemy lines?

There is a world of knives made expressly for hunting and camping. Neither the LMF or the KaBar are included in that world. They do not have the geometry to slice. They have the geometry to bash.

If you want to play campground commando (and there's nothing wrong with that)....get the LMF. Its an awesome looking knife for that. (Make sure to stay within 50 yards of the gassed up car with a trunk full of beer!)

If you want a cutting tool that you use to enhance your camping and hunting experience....don't.

Get an F1, or Barkie, or Mora, or etc. A slicer. Its probably more than enough knife, and will take care of 99% of what you need to do. (So would a Vic Farmer for that matter!)

I you want to cut through live electrical cables, nothing matches the LMF.

mr marc..AND ALL OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES...i have in depth info with regards to shock. that story is a lie , frankly speaking i dont care who , what or where said such {non-sense}came from. its not happening."you can not short out a power line with a knife"......however after reading more materials in my study room, from my studies it might be possible with that crap gerber tied to a {very} dry wooden stick.but that would also depend on
a. ambient temperature
b. moisture content of a stick.
c. muscle mass of a idiot holding the stick
d. amount of voltage and amperage at the moment of content.
e.perspiraition of the idiot.
f. no doubt he would have had cardiac arrest
g. humidity
h. when you have a electrical shock all muscles in the body contract to the point of dislocating shoulders, elbows ect, there by sending the heart into a {muscle spasm that is a direct cause of death} aka cardiac arrest.

in my professional opinion its a soldier whom wanted publicity.aka {propaganda} secondly if it were possible{which it is not} the DOD would not have revieled that to the public. i have testified and have studied electrical shock for years. the first person to {really investigate the shock sequalea }was dr mary anne cooper in chicago. roughly 1995.{she was and is a pioneer in this field} also dr engleshiner,. prior to 1995 ,anyone who has had a electrical injury either.
a. died
b. was not studied
c. suffered traumatic brain injury. usually mild to moderate.
d. sufferes from {post electrical shock sydrone}google little data available.
so no i do not and will not accept this as truth. just a moron whom claims to have done it. i see nothing to back up this claim.
hell ive been there already........see john hopkins university . or le&ssi.........there is {in my expert opinion no truth to this gimick type war story.} ITS A LIE. shame on whomever started this lie..i will testify and have testafied as a expert witness in a few shock cases. the problem remains {there are only 1,800 people worldwide that are alive to know this , the rest are dead...........but i knew a girl with a stick shift?.spanish fly.SAME LIE.

truth does matter. this story is a flat out lie.

Look porkchop...the story is on the internet. So it must be true. Duh!
thinking-001.gif

{exactly} anyone can post anything on the www. that does not make it true. and that so called soldier should have been court martialed for.
a. falsifying documents.
b. dis honorable conduct
c. failure to obey
d. lack of fidelity
e lying
f. providing classified info{although i no its a crap story}
g. dis honorable discharge.

Considering the thread is 3 years old and the OP hasn’t posted since I doubt it really matters.
