Gerber Paul Knife question

I just got back from my mom's house and I grabbed an old knife from my former bedroom. It's probably been in a cabinet for 25 years or so and is in outstanding condition.

The knife is a Gerber Paul Knife, model PW2. Inside of the handle is the number 6 if you are looking at the knife with the blade pointed up. I suppose it could also be a 9 with the blade down, but I think it's supposed to be a 6.

Can anyone give me some history on the knife as well as its approximate value? Again, the condition is excellent, having mostly sat in that cabinet for many years. TIA.

Yes that is a 6 because they only went up to 8. It denotes the year of production which is 1984 for a number 6. The model 2PW should have wood handles. There were 1326 number 6 - 2PW Paul knives made. There was a total of 27184 2PW Pauls made over a period of almost nine years and a total of almost 70500 Paul knives of all types made. They came with handles made of stainless, wood, Micarta (with and without scrimshaw) and several special very limited variations. Wood handles were the most common.

Value is tough to say as they have dropped in going price lately from my observations. Best price will be gotten if you also have the brown plastic clamshell case as well. The leather belt sheath might add $50. Check Ebay for a better idea on current prices but my estimate would be about $200 for an unused model in the box on a very very lucky day, but more likely in the low $150 range. If yours is used at all, does not have the box or does not lock open very solidly expect less.

Ten year ago there was more interest and you could get more for them.
