So I have been researching what kind of knife to get because asides from my mora companion I have no other good fixed blade in my collection and I have done my research and have narrowed it down to the Gerber Strongarm and the Becker BK17 I want to know which one is worth the money, why I should get either one and the pros and cons of both etc.

Personally, I very much prefer the BK16 over the 17...but, if you like the styling, go with the 17.
I don't think there are many people here that would steer you toward Gerber over a Becker.

ok thanks I just wanted other peoples opinions before I go and spend an exorbitant amount of money on a knife XD I just want to make sure I am making the right decision when it comes to buying a knife =) I much prefer the BK17 over the 16 because it comes down to looks for me I like clip point blades better than drop points.

Any of the Becker "Tweeners" (BK 15, 16 & 17) would be far superior to the Gerber. I happen to be a fan of the BK15 while Ethan himself carries a 16. Many like the 17 and I think it's just a matter of style preference.

Mind you the 15 is going the way of the dodo, and you might want to scoop that up before it disappears.

I've never owned the BK-17 so cannot speak to the geometry of the grind, but I have owned the BK16 as well as the Strongarm and a number of other similarly sized fixed blades. Here are some pics:

Strongarm is a bigger knife but also has a MUCH thicker geometry than the BK16 anyway, which makes it better for use as a pry-bar but MUCH worse for efficient cutting. Both should carve wood relatively well.

Strongarm has excellent retention in the grip and is fairly comfortable. The tip is very thick. The knife is slightly heavier than the BK-16 and probably the 17 as well, but may not be noticed. The steel is fairly tough, i doubt many would notice a difference between it and 1095CV in use, except that 420HC is 'stainless' = less maintenance required in wet environments. The edge on my strongarm is excellent form the factory, but there have been reports of much thicker or very uneven edges, something to take into account.

The Becker has a very comfortable handle as well, although the handle is more slippery when wet.

Both knives are USA-made. There are upgraded scales and sheaths for the Becker, and a different sheath is a likely "must" so take that into account. The strongarm sheath is actually quite good and even better when you include one of the adapters linked in my sig-line

IMHO, the Becker is the better knife but the cost reflects that, and if you add in a new sheath and upgraded scales then you might also consider looking into other options since you're now >$100 for your knife and the field is WIDE open there, including a number of options from custom makers here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/754-For-Sale-Fixed-Blades

Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you decide!

be that as it may the I do not like how the 15 looks looks is a big thing for me when buying a knife and I dont like how the 15 looks thanks for the input anyway though =)

I don't think the sheaths on the beckers are that bad. Granted, they aren't great... but they aren't terrible either. I find them to be perfectly servicable.

The strong arm seems like a well built knife, but I don't know much about gerbers 420hc steel. Kabars 1095 however is excellent stuff. The gerber may be stainless, but I live in a pretty temperate environment and have never had any trouble with my beckers rusting. I simply wipe them clean after use and never store wet or dirty. That's about it. My 16 has even been on canoe and kayak trips (fresh water) and handled those kljust fine.

My vote is for the becker. Though, I would love the chance to handle a strong arm.

I like both knives. I don't think you could go wrong either way. That being said I have a Gerber Strongarm and I love it.

Glad to hear your favorable comment on the Gerber Strongarm. Was leaning towards it as a survival and hunting knife that may do for skinning as I enjoy deer hunting. Two new folders recently and am ready to add a fixed blade to the collection. Realize a Buck Woodsman is a good hunting knife but the Strongarm should fill more tasks. The 420 HC blade is acceptable
