I recently got my hands on a gerber suspension. I was looking for something to replaced my leatherman juice s2. i love that little thing and i've used the heck out of it over the last year or two, but its starting to hinder me because the lack of a serrated blade and there is no saw. Well, anyways, I was looking for a replacement when I came across the Suspension. it was on sale at target and it looked interesting to say the least.

when i first opened the package, i noticed the fact that the full size multitool weighed a tremendous amount more than my leatherman. but it came with a sheath, so it wasn't all bad.

i've been using the suspension all week and its pretty nice, but i still dont think it will compare to a full size leatherman like the kick or maybe pst and it wouldn't put it in the working class multitool like the charge or wave. (not saying the suspenion isn't worthy of being used).

so far the pros of the tool are: comes with a very nice saw! i like the spring loaded pliers are a dream come true. the screwdrivers are a tid bit longer than any of the leatherman series screwdrivers

but the cons vastly outweigh the pros IN MY OPINION.

the blade steel is way to soft and doesn't hold an edge through out the day, the locking mechanism wears and hurts your fingers after using the tool for 8 hours. the handles are bulky and make it hard to really grip down on anything larger than 5/8", the pliers are made out of some type of cast iron or fairly weak powered steel which will break under to much pressure. kind've scares me because i have to crank down on somethings and when im in a pinch, the multi tool might be the only thing to come to my rescue. the Juice has no problem handling anything i throw at it. i just need that saw >_>, but i dont see investing to much into a more expensive multi right now. i got the juice for $6+tax at kmart which is the only reason i could get it.

as soon as i get my camera working, ill post some pictures up of the used leatherman and the gerber.

btw, im thinking about giving the gerber to my mom as an early valentine's day gift. (she works in construction too)

I had one for about 30 seconds. After handling it I came to the conclusion that ergonomics were not a design consideration at all when using it in the pliers position. Felt very clumsy in hand so I gave it away.

Short of the Artifact, I have not impressed with any Gerber tool in the last 10 years or so. I have the same complaints, chunky, poor steel, inferior build quality.

At the prices they go for, I have no idea how they stay in the multi-tool game other than name recognition. Give me a Leatherman, Victorinox, or SOG any day;)

I've carried a Suspension for a while now after downsizing from a Leatherman. Don't have a problem with any of your review, the Suspension (IMO) does not quite measure up to a Leatherman, but for what I tackle on a daily basis, it's ideal.;)

Yeah, I up sized from a Leatherman to the Suspension. I used it again today and it seems ideal for maybe a hobbiest or a teenager looking for a slick multi-tool, but it doesn't seem to fit the bill for me. I am thinking about handing it over to my mom, she works plumbing, and letting it actually get used instead of sitting in my drawer with all the other tools and what not. I think I'll end up buying a SOG one day or another. but, I'll give an actual review of the knife later this afternoon. I have a couple more things to say about it and a couple things that I may of mistaken.

Looks good on paper , sucks in actual use .

I would only recommend them to the most casual of users .

2 good things to say about Gerber. 1. at shot show this year, no new Suspension-clones! YaY!
and 2. when your suspension does break, I understand Gerber's warranty and service are pretty good!
I give em that... :p

Suggestion, do your homework, you would have saved time and money bro
with the reviews that came out about that piece of ..... metal!

I have the Suspension and its okay for what it is. I did have the tab to pull out the main blade break off within 2 months and couldn't find the receipt so glued on a replacement. I normally use mine with my telescoping, where I have to tighten screws, tighten bolts with the pliers, occasionally open packaging and it pretty much stays in the bag I use or clipped to my belt with a carabiner.

The pliers really do require a large hand with plenty of reach to use properly and I wouldn't like to put a lot of effort squeezing on the handle as it probably break. I did use it once though to free me from a public restroom cubicle where the lock that closed it was really stuck. I was glad I had it with me that day. The blades area really too short for the size of the multitool too. The scissors really dig into your hand and while usable, are quite painful, fairly quickly.

The Phillip's head screwdriver is quite nice however and it is easy to tighten up. I also like that the handles on the pliers have a little padding and the tools are on the outside. I also like the spring loaded pliers.

Of course it doesn't compare to my Leatherman or Swiss Tool for serious work. The later is my go to tool. Of course at work I normally have access to a full toolbox, but sometimes I am too lazy to open it up and out come the swiss tool, or using it around the home, on the tractor and car, or in the garden.

Yeah, I bought a Vic Supertinker II like 8 or 9 months ago and that has been my goto knife for everything. My mom was using a Kobalt multitool from Lowes'. So I decided to give the gerber to her (the difference in the two are like night and day.) Gerber does make good products still even if they did sell out to Fiskar's and Taylor United Cutlery. (The suspension is a Fiskar's product btw.) She loves it so far. I gotta find a way to clean the sand out of the handles on my juice. Every time I handle it, it just crunches and that is getting on my nerves.

I just bought one of those "Suspension" model Gerbers at clearance - $7.37 - that's about the right price to ride in the glove box of my wife's car or give a grandson who looses everything anyway!
Peace
Revvie
