I'm interested in some knives from across the pond, but don't recognize the designations of the steels used in them. Can anyone tell me if any of the following steel types go by another, more familiar name, or point me toward a reference source that describes their characteristics when used in knives? Thanks.

1) RWL-34
2) CK60
3) 1.2519
4) 1.2721
5) 1.4111

Btw, what first got me interested was the thread in the Gallery from 01-01-2002 titled "Daniel Jeremiah Boll (German Knifemaker)", posted by "ABA".

CK 60 is equal to 1060 alloy steel
1.2519 is very close to 52100
1.2721 is a high nickel alloy steel used like a shock resisting alloy.
I would estimate it behaves like S5 tool steel.
1.4111 is identical to 440C.

The RWL-34 must be a trade name since it is not in the German registry.
Hope this helps.

RWL 34 is similar to ATS 34, only it is a Powder Metallurgical steel with a small addition of Vanadium (0.2%). It is supposed to be a little superior to ATS 34.

1.4111 is not exactly 440 C, the german version of 440C is called 1.4125. 1.4111 is a verry good stainresistant steel mostly used for razors for it's fine structure

Just a quick note, we've had excellent results with W.1.4116 German Stainless which we use in our 5200 & 5300 series knives. No customer complaints to report and several positive media articles have been published.<p>
