It's a symbol designed by Baden Powell and is used by a lot of European Scouting organisations. It's very similar to the fleur de lis. After the war the german Solingen knife manufacturers started using their old stock and machinery to produce these knives for the scouting groups. My father used to have one from the 50's but sadly it was lost. I think Linder still makes one.

other than its still a scout knife.
perhaps for swiss scouts?
after all there are german speaking swiss...
the thing is authenticating
the swiss cross symbol as
an original factory fitted part....
wartime youth knives came in metal scabbards.

German Nazi Hitler Youth knife and sheath
this leaves a lot of questions
about its origins and manufacture.

After the war a lot of manufacturers like the one's in Solingen made "hybrid" versions of their existing stock parts. Sometimes you see HJ handles with different blade styles and sheats popping up without the HJ diamond in the handle or replaced with a different symbol. They where trying to survive and made good use with their stock. They sold these hybrids to anyone who would buy them. US occupation forces, other youth organisation etc. They even compiled "original" HJ knives with existing parts post war to sell to G.I.'s as war booty without the HJ diamond. Later these badges where glued back in and the knives where sold at a premium.

Wow I didn't know they actually existed with the Swiss symbol! They look pretty cool that way.

true... i once had a post war 70's version on which
the diamond shield bore
the manufacturer's logo.
i found it visually distracting
and plucked it out
and reglued it
on the blank flip side...

It's obvious that the heyday of using Mother of Pearl as a knife handle material is now long gone.

I mean, sure, it still gets used, but the material is just simply not as common anymore on knives.

So, as a dedication to the beauty of Mother of Pearl, this thread is asking for forum users here to please post up their own examples of MOP handled knives. They can be new, vintage, antique, fixed blade or folding 👌

I'll start with these two...

A USA made Queen/Schatt & Morgan 'Dawn of a New Era' knife from the year 2012. A total of 100 were made of these knives.
The French made opera glasses are circa 1880...

This one is a Parker Cutlery Company 'Self Defender' Bowie knife from the mid 1980's. Made in Seki, Japan...

Are those from your personal collection?

The second one with the red handle is a holbein pattern from Switzerland (Swiss mercenaries where in high demand in the 1500's) the NSDAP used for their SS and SA daggers.
