Get rid of Yahoo search box on task bar?

I bought my grand daughter a new laptop, Compaq, nothing fancy, just enough of everything to do school work and do a little surfing on the net. My pet peeve is the Yahoo search box on the task bar on the right side bottom. It is running Vista :barf:, Right clicking on it does nothing. I can not find it in any startup programs running hyjack this or Mike Linn's startup control panel. Anyone have an idea as to how to get rid of it, I set it to run FF 3 as the internet browser and chose Google as search engine. I just do not know how to clean up the bar. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance,
Jim

Go to run, type in 'msconfig', hit enter. You'll get a box with tabs, one is marked "startup". Click on that one and you'll see a list of programs that start when the computer does. The yahoo search should be in that list, just unclick it (and anything else you don't want to start) and then reboot.

When it restarts you'll probably get a box telling you that you're using 'selective startup'. Just click the 'don't show me this again'.

I will try this, thanks. Although, I thought Mike Linn's startup Control Panel and or hyjack this would have found it.

Vista does not have that option, but rather options to allow you to control startup. I think since the yahoo does not appear, either Compaq or MS got paid off to hide it under some other names or not appear at all. It is going to take a Vista Geek to solve it. And I am not that guy, heck, I grew up using ms dos.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, but alas it is still there.

Hmmmm. I have a laptop with Vista and I can get msconfig to work.

Maybe this will help. How to or this one

You guys are ignoring the simple solution. A small strip of electrical tape placed over the offending object.

Seriously though. I don't have Vista, and you've probably already tried this, but try right clicking on the tool bar and seeing if the Yahoo thing is untickable either from a drop down menu or the properties dialog. Also look in your control panel's toolbar settings.

If you still have regedit in Vista, you could try a registry search for Yahoo, and delete anything set to run on startup.

First experience with Vista, now have about 3 hrs under my belt, thanks for information, I was looking for the run box as in XP.

Thanks for the information,
Jim

It does have one like in XP if the start menu is in Classic view. I didn't think about that since I never use the newer start menu.

You're welcome, hope it works for you.

The electrical tape solved my VCR clock problem years ago, I think I am headed out to the shop and to heck with the tech solutions.:D

The Yahoo Toolbar is a stand-alone application and can be removed from your PC using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

That is what I thought, but it is NOT listed in the Add/Remove programs, that is what has me stumped.

I wish otherwise, but the tape is holding.:grumpy:

BTW: It is appearing on the (task bar) located on the lower right of screen, next to the wireless indicator.

check the options on the taskbar item , and the FF3 options/plugins for that yahoo
like this :
Open Mozilla Firefox,
Go to Tools Menu, Click On Add-ons
A new Add-ons windows popup, Select Yahoo Toolbar and click on Unistalled button.
Cheers

The Yahoo Search Box was on the computer before installing FF3, I checked anyway and it is not there.
Thanks for you try,
Jim

I just did an advanced search on the system with hidden files being checked and searched for yahoo. Found a folder, several files and script files. Using Vista, I was able to delete all the files mentioning yahoo and I then rebooted. GUESS WHAT?
Yahoo Search is still there and working. I did another advanced search and there are no files mentioning yahoo.

I think it has been flashed into a chip, Compaq probably got paid by yahoo to do it and force me to see that **** box. Right now the tape idea is the only thing that will work so I do not see it. It is just not right that it is a computer I paid for is forcing me to see something I rather not. Makes me mad just as a matter of principle.

what happens when you right click on the toolbar? maybe there is a list there to remove it.

Nothing but a bunch of options for configuring how yahoo searches, the delete option is greyed out. So unlike most task bar programs that right clicking allows you to exit program or close program. It does not have any of those options, like I said before, I am beginning to think it is not software related, but hardware. The Compaq although new did NOT come with ANY system disks. So, I have no resources to reinstall and pick out what I want to boot.

Thanks for the interest.
Jim

BTW the computer is for my grand child, so it will not be a bother to her, it just makes me mad that Compaq did not give me an option. They must have been paid off by Yahoo. The yahoo search bar brings up as much advertising as it does actual search results.

Try right clicking on a blank part of the taskbar. Somewhere outside of the Yahoo thing and away from any task buttons. On XP, you'll have a drop down menu for "Toolbars", and you can check and uncheck stuff you don't want. Don't know if it's still there on Vista though.
