I've seen glass breaker attachments on several knives lately, mostly later-model Microtechs. They say 'carbide glass breaker' which I assume means tungsten carbide, but I was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not they really work. I was thinking about grabbing a Microtech mini SOCOM Elite with the seat belt cutter and glass breaker to keep around for car-type emergencies... anybody test either the belt cutter or the glass breaker?

I really can't speak for any of these, but I find the CQB2 from MOD the most appealing. I don't know if you can still find any though.

I sent two auto Microtech MSE-SC's to my son and daughter when they were stationed in Baghdad. My son liked the light weight and said the belt cutter and window breaker worked very well. He is a Captain who lead a recon platoon over there for 18 months. She was stationed at the main airport.

I don't think you will be disappointed. The Spyderco rescue knife was also popular among his guys but I don't know if it has a window breaker button.

Hmm... thanks, glad to hear somebody else is using them. Anybody have any first hand experience trying out these features? I, um, can't just go around breaking glass windows with it, lol. "I only wanted to see if it worked!" doesn't fly with school security. Er, wait, I am school security. See, that would lose me my job...

So yeah.... anyone actually try breaking glass with these things? And how do they hold up in pocket carry? I was thinking it might be a little hazardous, with a sharp point sticking up out of your pocket like that.

The Spyderco Assist has a glass breaker that protrudes when you squeeze the knife into the handle.

i have used the GBD on my MT Executive Scarab to good effect. punched a nice hole through the side glass of a sedan. make sure u wear gloves (safety glass gets into everything) and be prepared to have ur knife come out looking like a 'user'...hehe

I personally tested the Spyderco Assist with the glass breaker. I broke many many windows at our local wrecking yard. The model uses a retractable Tungsten carbide tip specifically ground to break glass. Because Tungsten carbide is breakable, the knife was designed to be able to replace the glass breaker without having to replace the knife. The back section of the handle is removable.

LOL, well, YOU in particular would say that, now wouldn't you?

Anyone know if Microtech offers replacements on their glass breakers? Their site seems to be under construction and half their links don't work.

I've been looking for replacement glass breaker tips for a maglite mod for a long time without success. I've seen mods using a stainless steel bolt which would be easy to make. Does anyone know how well that would work?

Not knife related, but they sell glass breaker replacement end caps for Maglites. Malkoff Devices has some. I'm sure there are others as well.

+1

I also tested the glass breaker of the Assist on a car that I junked. Worked phenomenally! The Assist also came with the nastiest and sharpest serrations I've had on any knife- spyderco or other. Definitely worth a look OP.
