I have been considering the Global brand of kitchen knives. With serveral weddings coming up, I began searching for Kitchen knife sets for a starter set. Of the good factory sets, the Wusthof and Henkels are really the only two brands available locally. At times past, I have run across AF Dick and MesserMeister but, it's been a while.

In my online searches, I stumbled across the Global line. They seem like a superior brand to the German lines from what I have read on-line. While beauty is in the eye of the holder, they seem like an attractive and visually appealing knife. Their flat grind and slim blades should mean they will stay sharp for a long enough time that sending them out to have them properly resharpened would be a reasonable thing to do which would eliminate the concerns about sharpening them at home.

I've considered the Global knives for myself, but they are odd enough looking that I probably wouldn't give them as a gift. Having said that, I would pick another brand of somewhat odd looking knives as being the best performing knives around. Take a look at the MAC "original series" knives. The alloy is great and they cut just like razors. For example I was dicing peeled tomatoes tonight. My MAC utility knife blade is only 1.5 mm thick. I can dice a stack of ripe tomato slices without any mashing. I own over 100 kitchen knives and my MAC knife was my number one pick for the job.

Aloha,
I have the Globals and I love them. Yes they are funny looking......They come out of the box scary sharp, (I think they have a 17 degree angle on them...) They are well built, with a good heft and balance. Global also sells a 29 dollar ceramic wheel sharpener that has their angle of sharpening on it. If the knives get any bit dull, a couple of swipes through this and they are very sharp again. My wife aptly demonstrated this about a month ago when she cut the tip of her thumb off rather easily with one of our Global knives. All my other knives are sitting in a drawer now with the Globals in the knife block. I have nothing but good things to say about them. There was a discussion about them in "The Usual Suspect" forum called "Whats in your kitchen?" started by Aluminum Overcast. You wont go wrong with the Globals......

I have one global knife that I use on occasion. Excellent blade execution and they slice and dice extremely well. The handles, however, just don't feel "right"in my hands. This is a purely personal thing. In short they are well made, slice well and hold an edge at least as well as the German mainstream knives.

I have the Global G5 vegetable knife and have no complaints about it. I think they have an incredible edge and are very easy to maintain and sharpen. Not as wide as the Tridents or the Henckels so it seems to be a lot more efficient and accurate when slicing cuccumbers, mushrooms, onions etc...
For me it's a perfect fit...
