I have a leather sheath that needs a minor repair in an area that was glued. What we be the best glue for the job? I plan on gluing then clamping the leather together. Thanks for your help in advance.

Tandy sells a "leather glue" but I think it's just rubber cement you can get at any supermarket. I haven't tried anything else and haven't had any problems.

Barge Cement is by far the best that I have seen or used...Just make sure the parts are clean and dry before applying.

Note: if one side you are glueing to is a finished side, mark the outline of that section and the dye around it, then use sand paper to rough up the surface or the glue will not adhere very well. The dye part is because if you do it later, the dye wont always penetrate through the glue and you end up with an unsightly glue spot.

Barge is a contact cement that works particularly well on leather. That's the glue to use if you want to retain flexibility. You can get it at saddleshops, craft stores, any place that sells leather and leatherworking supplies.

If it doesn't need to be very flexible white glue such as Sobo works well -- Sobo is more flexible when dry than wood glues but it's the same basic stuff, just a slightly different formula. White glues don't have the tendency to peel apart like contact cements and they work well for a stiff heavy leather sheath. Any craft store should have Sobo.

If it doesn't need to be flexible at all cyanoacrylic superglues work fine in the quick-gel formulations.

Thank you very much for the input. Time to do some shopping. Can you tell me anywhere online that could be some of those? I live in a small town and there is no one here with any of the glue's that were metioned.

Barge can be hard to find but you can substitute any contact cement; it just won't be as strong. You can substitute Elmer's wood glue for Sobo; it won't be as flexible. Sobo is a brand name; anything labeled "craft glue" should be similar. Surely you can get superglue anywhere? The kind that's labeled something like "quick-gel, good for leather, wood, and other porous materials" is better for porous materials but you can use the other kind if you coat both surfaces lightly and let them dry separately before gluing -- that keeps the thin regular superglue from all being absorbed before it hardens.
