"Goo Gone" type products -- are they safe?

I use my Spyderco Calypso Jr. at work for opening boxes. I love the knife, it works great. I open up the boxes easy, but the tape leaves some sticky residue on my blade. I try warm water and soap, but that does not get rid of the stickiness entirely. I found some "Goo Gone" (http://www.magicamerican.com/googone.shtml) in my closet and had a go at it. It cleans the residue off easy, then I give it a warm bath. Everything "seems" fine, but I am worried the chemicals might be tearing apart my Calypso, anyone know if "Goo Gone" is safe, or what product I should be using instead of it? Thanks in advance.

Goo gone stinks to high heaven... you're better off with lighter fluid or camp (white) gas...

I've used lighter fluid for almost 30 years in a variety of "GOO" situations and never had a problem on bare steel.

I have used goo-gone for a long time. I prefer it because it does not evaporate like other solutions and it is oil-based which makes the "goo" unsticky. If you use something else suggested as wd-40, I use a thumb size piece of paper towel to saturate and the dissolving agent does not evaporate as quick.
Have you ever found a great old knife and when removed the vendors sticky price tag, found an unfaded dark square mark on the handle?

Isopropyl alcohol will also work in a pinch, not as well as white gas since it takes a little rubbing.

My highly complex cleaning and preservation techniques:

Stainless steel: WD40, then isopropyl alcohol
Carbon steel: alcohol, then WD40

Isopropyl alcohol works well for most things, but do not let the celloid handles of a SAK be in contact with it for too long. I warped the handles on my cybertool by washing it in alcohol and leaving it in overnight.
Okay for contact, but don't let it sit.

Luckily you can easily get replacement scales for any SAK!

On a caly Jr. it would be fine.
