For $$$ reasons, I started rolling my own cigarettes. I just finished a can of Bugler and bought a can of Bali Shag today. The consistency of this tobacco is a very fine cut. You have to take care not to compress it too much when rolling so you can get a decent hit. I'm still getting used to that. Can you recommend a brand that has the same cut as Bugler but a better taste?

...Are ya using a roller or an injector?...They each work best with different cuts of tobacco. I use a Supermatic. It's an injector. I have the best luck with Stokers #2...I get mine online...It runs about $16 a pound and I get 3 cartons out of a pound...

I use a roller but I can roll a perfect cigarette with my hands. Lately I've just been handrolling them. I think the Bali would be near impossible to get a good hit off of using the roller. I tried an injector but I had problems with my stuff falling out when I put them in a pack for the course of the day.

...The manufacturers almost comb the long cut tobacco they use to make it extremely uniform so it won't fall out of the package in your pocket. Long cut tobacco used for roll your own use can't be as uniform. The Stoker's #2 and Bugler are both medium cut but Stoker's is a medium/coarse cut. Bugler is a fine cut so it may tend to fall out more than Stoker's. Bali Shag is a short/fine cut tobacco so fall out might be much more noticeable than Bugler.I put my smokes in an old metal Camel case and I stand 'em up on the filter when they are in my pocket. I have some fallout but minimal...

...Tubes run about $3.50 per 200 so with the tobacco it's about $8.75 a carton or so. The number of cartons depends on how tight you like to pack 'em. I pack pretty tight but if I back off on the tobacco very slightly I can get almost 4 cartons out of a pound...

I think rolling your own is a great idea, but I just like the instant gratification of just buying a pack. When I lived in MI, cigs were around $5-6 a pack. Down here in good ol' NC, they're anywhere from $2.25-3.50 a pack. So I'll keep on buying Marlboro Lights!:D

Don't get me started on prices:grumpy:

When I was in Iraq in 03-04, I was paying $3 a carton for smokes. Usually Business Club menthol or Miami. A log of Cope was around $15.

Back in '94 RJ Reynolds & Phillip Morris got into a price war. The commisary at Hood had Camels for $4.95 a carton and Marlboros $6.95, limit two of course. GPCs were always $2-3 a carton and were my favorite to tote in the field. At that price you didn't mind if someone bummed a smoke off you.

This was from the Iraqis. At the BX/PX on the airfield, reds were $20 a carton.
