So a family member just graduated from the academy, and I want to get a good gift gift for him, he's always wanted to join the lapd.

Either a knife or something else, I want to spend about $50 (he doesnt like gifts too expensive anyway).

I was originally thinking the Spyderco police but its a bit pricey.. does anyone have any suggestions? if its a knife i want something highly reliable, hi-quality and with a half serrated edge, very utilitarian. think spyderco police, benchmade grip, sebenza (but of course with a much smaller price tag, etc) any help/thoughts would be appreciated!

In that general price range, I think the Benchmade Grip is a great choice.
Great knife from a great company and a very classy presentation, too.

thanks for the ideas guys. i aleady have the ritter benchmade grip and love it-- otherwise i probably would get a grip for him!

the 710 d2.. indeed a very nice knife. i will definitely consider spending a bit more for that one :D

Having done the police officer thing, as I look back, I would have liked to have a multitool. My recommendation would be something like a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit Plus. It does not have to have everything or be overly bulky, but it should be top quality. I don't know what they go for, but I think they are near your price range.

BTW, they have 2 blades (for when you need a knife) along with everything else. And trust me when I say that if he is going to use a knife at all, he will use that multitool probably 3 times as much as a knife alone. Such uses might include:

screwdriver to remove license plates or repair dept. issued equip in the field

leather punch to put a more convenient hole in leather duty belt

bottle opener for soda bottles

...just to mention a few things :)

congratulations to your friend, i work as a police officer in the l.a. area and frequent lapd stations. now to the knife, cops seem to like the smith and wesson knives, i guess having made the connection with the pistols. they are inexpensive.

the multi tool is also a good idea.

Well, being in Tucson about 50 yards north of the border, if you stop at a little roadside restaurant on wheels that offers Mexican food, chances are better than not that when you ask for a coke, you get it in a glass bottle, just like the old days. Apparently, a lot of soda is like that in Mexico. Being that he is in LA, and definitely will be eating at less than top-notch blue-ribbon restaurants, I was just thinking of the legal possibilities.

OK, back on topic.

thanks so much for the additional ideas guys-- becoming an lapd officer has really been kinda a 'dream come true for him' so thats why i want to get him a gift.. normally i'm not really the gift giving type. tomorrow morning is actually his graduation ceremony. i'll be attending and taking pics :)

i think the multitool is a great idea too- maybe a 'compact' version that still has many of the functional pieces that he might find useful in the field. in the world of these 'multitools', are there some best of breed brands? i know there is victorinox, leatherman.. are there any others worth looking at?

Buy a chas clements leather sap. USSS model in black would do nicely. :)Exactly 50 bucks and It will be of great service. Have him modify a pocket for it, and tell him to have it handy whenever hes facing a belligerent drunk refusing to leave a bar etc.. In a gloved hand its very unnoticeable and works wonders in collarbones etc..

Will make many cuffings easier, and a nice conversation piece with the older cops...Its always useful in organizations like that to get off on the right foot with the old guard..;) Its also VERY well made and valuable in itself..

unfortunately i dont think lapd is authorized to carry saps.

believe it or not, the tool i use most on duty is a small swiss army knife i keep on my key chain. those scissors come in real handy. all the high speed stuff i carry just in case rarely comes out.

I agree that saps are probably not authorized. If they are, he may be "issued" one. And if he has one and it's not authorized ... well, let's just say he may be in for an involuntary career change.

definitely not issued, they are issued minimal gear. i have never seen an lapd officer carrying one either.

I've been a Police Officer In a Suburb of Cleveland Ohio for 9 years and the last 5 I've carried the Masters Of Defense(MOD) Mark II on my belt and the Mark I in my bag. There cost a little expensive but are worth every damm penny. You buy a $50.00 knife and you get a $50.00 knife.

I carry a few diff. knives when on duty. Sometimes an Endura 4, Manix, or Sebenza. It depends on what I feel like that day. Buy from a well known GOOD company, and you can't go wrong. Most important however is common sense. Tell him to be safe.

.........if he were to follow your suggestion he wouldn't last 24 hours "on the job".....sorry but thats just bad advice...I don't know how they do things in Finland, but carry one of those saps while in uniform ANYWHERE here in the US, especially as a rookie, and you'll be getting to know IA and your rep real quick.............................believe me, carrying a SAP is NO WAY to endear yourself to your Brothers in Blue.

I like the SAK recommendation....everyone likes a nice SAK or multi-tool.

30-year veteran UK police officer here. Buy him a good Swiss Army Knife or a multitool.

It'll be used every day, unlike a "Super-Duper Zombie Deanimator."

I have been frequenting knife forums for years, and have seen lots of officers recommended to buy SDZDs.

I have yet to read a report of an LEO using a knife for self-defence.
