Here I was lookin at some of the Graham Brothers work when I saw a Ringed Razel.
What the heck is a ring doin on a Razel???? I asked Jon and Josh. Well Josh just gave me funny answers and Jon went into all the detail of the ring and Jon asked me if I'd like to try out Josh's Ringed Razel.
I was floored that Jon would be so nice to let me torture test Josh's knife.
Whatta Guy :)
Graham Knives Website

Specs of the The Ringed Razel NR#8:
3/16" thick S30V stainless steel
Handle material= Mammoth Ivory
Overall length= 7 1/2"
Blade length= 3 1/4"
Sheath type= alligator skin pocket sheath

I got Josh's Ringed Razel and was in awe of the beauty of the mammoth ivory handle. The way it looks with the Ring is just so ...well....RIGHT :)
Mosaic pins add to the classy looks of the Razel
The Alligator pocket sheath was a perfect complement to the ruggedness and style of the RR

I like to wear a fixed blade on my right (strong) side. That and my left arm is OOS
Hahahahahaha

When wearing the Alligator sheath I could draw the Ringed Razel in a couple of holds. I like to cant the sheath ~ 45 degrees forward so I can sweep a blade out. The Ring gives a smooth purchase in drawing reverse or saber.

Saber grip the Ring also locks right in there. And when you're working with it you can let it slip down without putting the RR down

The Ringed Razel looks and felt so much bigger in my hand than my Razel
But that is just an illusion created by the wider blade. The thickness is the same. I swore differently till I miced (measured) them

The RR felt VERY comfy in hand and is not too big for my edc type stuff

Speaking of EDC stuff. The Ringed Razel flew through reinforced garden and heater hose. It also did a right nice job on everything else we use em for in life. I always like to cut some hose as it is a fine test of grind, blade thickness, and edge retention. I didn't use Josh's Ringed Razel in nose to nose with my Razel cause I didn't want to take a hammer to the ring as I was chiseling into a wood door frame. I did this with my Razel and it did a great job.
I don't have pics of the cuts cause I couldn't figure out a way to cut and take a pic. Kevin was deployed for a bit and absolutely useless to me when I had the Ringed Razel :)

All in all the ring is a very functional option/addition to the Razel. I no longer say "Why would you put a ring on a Razel?"

I want one, now

Of all the knives I own and have pass thru my hands.......
The populace/sheeple have only been WOWED!!! by two of the knives I've shown them. The Ringed Razel and my Razel.
Kinda disappointing when I show all the cool stuff to folk and they don't have the appreciation I do.
BUT .... you all can relate to this

Right???

Thanks Jon for lettin me try out Josh's Ringed Razel

Oh, so it's NOT chisel ground?

I'm sorry if I seem dim-witted, but from the pics I'd seen in the past and the fact that it's a knife/chisel hybrid, I had thought the Razel was chisel ground. Having only my experience with the lukewarm cutting abilities of my CQC7 many years ago, I never really gave the Razel much more than a glance or two.

Nope! NOT CHISEL Ground..V Grind. Even and nice cutting.

Can you use the ring for extended work without hot spot issues.?

Cliff, The longest I used the Ringed Razel was for ~ 45 minutes straight.
During that time I had it in MANY positions using the two piercing tips, two edges. I didn't have my finger in the ring in a number of cutting events. Never made my hand raw...or Hot Spotted. In saber and reverse the ring and fingers sorta meld together well.
Tho this would no doubt be very subjective. The hand geometry and flesh padding would mean a lot.....Ought to fit most people just fine I'd imagine.

One time I even used it to cut up my dinner in a vertical position as I couldn't use my left hand (in splint and no dexterity). Sorta like a flat plane ULU :)

Since ya'll are here right now, is a razel more than just style, ie is there some functionality over a (American) tanto grind? Obviously the straight blade is nice, but then you could get a sheepsfoot blade that's about as strong, tip-wise I'd imagine.

At any rate, that knife (and all the Graham Bros. knives) are great-looking, some I've never seen before (e.g. pocket kukri).

You have exactly the same question I did before I bought one. Here is what I found. You get a knife with two sharp points instead of one and two cutting surfaces instead of one. Try one, you might find your own uses for the multiple cutting options.

I cant type , and dont have much time right now , but here goes.
Their is much more function than a tanto .
In prying the tip is wide and the leverage is spread across the whole front.

scraping a gasket, or a sticker on a window is easy.

chiseling, works good for cutting a door frame for a new lock

push cutting with one hand with front edgewith out holding material with otherhand. cutting a steak with front tip, pushing down you dont have to hold it with a fork.

there are lots of uses you cant do as well with a conventional blade.

We did a pass around awhile back, you could probably look it up and see what other people had to say about it , or do a search for razel.

That's kinda what I figured, as far as functionality went, that being that it's a chisel, prybar and scraper more than any tanto point you'll find, and I guess now and then the top edge might be more useful than a long edge with a handle to get in the way. And it's really cool looking!

That ring handle definitely sells the knife. If you guys did up some of your other pocket fixed blades w/ rings, they might just catch on.

Good stuff Graham bros.! Sorry I don't have any money to support you (though if I did that, I've have to get a few knives from like 15 other makers :D)

Arawn and I had the same concerns, and for the exact same reasons... dissatisfaction with the old Benchmade chisel ground CQC7. So... are all Razel's V-ground?

Exactly.
This (in addition to a number of other Graham knives) look exceedingly promising to me. The Razel in particular would seem to be an amazingly utilitarian fixed-blade EDC. I'll probably just confer with a few local LEO buddies/sources before committing to a purchase. Living in Kali, I've found it's wise to research prior to buying if one is interested in street carry.

Graham brothers,
You make some beautiful sharp things.
I look forward to supporting you.

Cheers,
B.

Foxhole, yes all Razels are v grind. The primary bevel is hollow ground,
and the front bevel is flat ground.
I think their are probably alot of people that think the razel is a gimmick,
but We assure you it is not.
Thanks for the interest guys.

i must admit. i always thought the razel was chisel grind too. but after learning that it wasn't, just a month or two ago, now i'm just waiting for them to take orders again.

i got my eye on a pocket khukuri and a pocket razel :p

We started taking orders on saturday.

Somethings making me say it...

I ordered a edc razel saturday! Great experience all around. Josh Graham answered all my emails quickly and had lots of patience in answering all my questions.

If you want a razel I wouldn't hesitate long in ordering; I bet that the waiting list gets long quickly. I'm just glad that I must be somewhere near the top of it! ;)
